About Town: Heat Relief Info, Cleanup Day, Foreclosure Help and More

Patch columnist Mike Prasad gives a rundown of what has Scotch Plains and Fanwood residents talking.

Heat Wave Relief and Free Awareness Information
Fanwood’s Police Department continues to designate the Chelsea Senior Living Center at 295 South Avenue as a cooling station. Residents and visitors to the relief station are reminded to bring any medication or functional-needs items they may need. Check on any elderly neighbors and let them know about the cooling station in Fanwood. And don’t forget about your pets! Never leave them unattended in a car – temperatures can reach deadly levels in just minutes.

The American Red Cross offers free disaster-preparedness information on its web site, including a one-page guide with safety tips related to heat waves, in both English and Spanish. The hottest part of the day is usually from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Try and avoid exposure to the outdoors during that time, and if you have to be outside make sure to wear sunscreen and drink plenty of water.

Union County Hosts Hazardous Materials Cleanup Day
Drop-off household hazardous materials at the Union County Vocational-Technical Schools in Scotch Plains on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The county will be collecting oil-based paint (not latex), antifreeze, pool chemicals, pesticides, batteries, unbroken fluorescent bulbs, mercury switches and thermostats, tires (up to 8 off the rims) and more. Residents can obtain a $5 gift certificate from Home Depot for turning in a mercury thermostat at this event. For more information or specifics on what can be disposed at this event, visit www.ucnj.org.

Facing Foreclosure – There is Help Available
Scotch Plains and Fanwood residents facing foreclosure on their homes can find help from the Union County Foreclosure Task Force. You can reach them at 888-995-HOPE 24/7 in both English and Spanish, and there is no cost for this assistance. There is also information available about this program at Fanwood’s Borough Hall.
