Fanwood Council Issues Four Honorary Resolutions Monday

Amid a full agenda Monday, the Borough Council honored local residents at its monthly meeting.

David Zeigler accepted the Fanwood Borough Council's "Volunteer of the Month" award at the council's monthly meeting Monday night. Zeigler, an engineer for New Jersey Transit, is an assistant chief (and former chief) of the Fanwood Fire Department.

"Some of you may know him. If he put on his fire uniform, you may know him a little better," Mayor Colleen Mahr said, turning toward Zeigler, who stood behind her at the council's podium. "The community is built on those who give of themselves."

She presented Zeigler a framed print of the Fanwood train station, the gift traditionally given to those recognized as the council's Volunteer of the Month.

"I volunteer my time because I love to do it," Zeigler said.

Mahr also recognized Don Wussler on behalf of the council. Wussler, a 68-year resident of Scotch Plains, earned the Fanwood-Scotch Plains Rotary Club's "Volunteer of the Year" award. Mahr issued a resolution in Wussler's honor, and declared June 2 – the day Wussler received his award from the Rotary Club – "Don Wussler Day."

"He is a man of heart, a man of courage, and a man who gets things done," Councilman Anthony Parenti said after the nomination.

Mahr also issued an honorary resolution in recognition of former Scotch Plains-Fanwood Patch editor Lindsay Wilkes-Edrington, who launched the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Patch one year ago. Last week, she left Scotch Plains and Fanwood, having accepted a promotion and transfer to launch a new Patch site in Rhode Island. Find the full story on her honorary resolution here.

And one week after Memorial Day, Parenti issued an honorary resolution recognizing the Fanwood residents killed in action while serving in the military:

Ernest Ashworth, Jr., William J. Brohm, III, Charles S. Burns, III, Richard Gere, Theodore F. Ginder, Eugene W. Hendricks, Edward M. Klaniecki, John T. MacDermott, Hugh MacLennan, Edward Stagaard, Walter R. Stewart, and Donald E. Vinton.

Following the honorary resolutions, the Borough Council reviewed a number of reports, resolutions, and ordinances. Details on those items will follow later this week. Stay tuned.
