Fanwood-Scotch Plains Girl Scouts 'Party In The Park'

On Sept. 4 more than 200 Fanwood-Scotch Plains Girl Scouts gathered in Fanwood’s LaGrande Park to kick off a new program year and mark the 100th anniversary year of Girl Scouts of the USA.

Activities included a “bounce house” and inflatable obstacle course, face painting, craft projects, a movie about the history of Girl Scouting, a scavenger hunt, a water balloon toss, science experiments, hula hoops and “mad-libs.” As it began to rain, the festivities moved under the park program shelter for a sing-along and multi-level bridging ceremony.

Bridging marks a girl’s progression from one Girl Scout level to the next: during this event a group of entering second-graders bridged from Daisy Girl Scouts to Brownie Girl Scouts, a group entering fourth grade bridged from Brownies to Junior Girl Scouts, and girls entering sixth grade bridged from Juniors to Cadette Girl Scouts.

There are more than 900 Girl Scouts in Fanwood-Scotch Plains, which is one of 138 communities in Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey. The council serves more than 25,000 girls and 11,000 adult members in the counties of Hudson, Essex, Union, Somerset, Hunterdon, southern Warren and parts of Middlesex.
