Farmers Market Shoppers Witness Vehicular Debacle Saturday

An elderly Fanwood resident sent a young woman to the hospital Saturday, as she reportedly struck parked vehicles and Farmers Market vendor displays while attempting to reverse.

A 19-year-old woman was struck by a parked vehicle at the Scotch Plains Farmers Market, held in the Municipal Building parking lot, Saturday.

At approximately 8:50 a.m., the Scotch Plains Police responded to the motor vehicle accident.

According to Scotch Plains Police Captain Brian Donnelly, an 88-year-old Fanwood resident was backing out of a parking space at the Farmers Market in her Chevy Malibu when she stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal.

She reportedly struck a parked vehicle, which then struck the 19-year-old woman, who was sitting in a chair.

The young woman was taken to Overlook Medical Center in Summit, NJ, with a foot injury.

The Malibu continued in reverse, striking several other parked vehicles and Farmers Market displays, Donnelly said.

No other individuals were struck.

The driver was also taken to Overlook Medical Center after complaining of chest pains. She was issued a summons by the Scotch Plains Police Department for careless driving.
