Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School principal David Heisey is interviewing applicants for one of the high school's newest vacancies: assistant principal for athletics.
Despite a large show of support from fellow teachers, coaches, student athletes and alumni, the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Board of Education ultimately did not rehire Rob Harmer, its current assistant principal for athletics, last spring. Harmer will instead depart the district to begin his new job as athletic director for New Providence High School. When the school year ends June 23, it will have been Harmer's 11th year as Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School's athletic director.
Heisey said that he hopes to find a new assistant principal for athletics by mid-summer.
"Interviews are taking place and we plan to have somebody in place July 1," he said. "Right now we're early in the process."
He added that it was possible, though not likely, that the school would use an interim athletic director while the search for a full-time athletic director continued.
Heisey would not say how many candidates he has interviewed for the position, referring to confidentially restrictions."It's really a personnel issue,'' he said. But one name that did surface was former Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School athletic director Gene Schiller.
Stay tuned for updates in this developing story.

The two top technology support positions have also been eliminated in the district. Outsourcing will have extra costs such as a slower response to teacher requests for technology support.

Wow -- based on the condition of the computers at School One, I'm astonished to learn that there were any technology support positions in the district.

I understand those computers are really old. It's a miracle that those technology people can get anything done with those old things. They should just junk them. How can we ask our teachers to do more things with computers and our kids if we don't give them newer computers and support using them. According to the website, there was only four people for the whole district and now they got rid of two? Who thought that up. My husband's company outsourced their computer work and it cost them hundreds of thousands of $ and lots of lost productivity. But why would they care how they waste our money.

They are making all of these cuts, teachers still haven't been told if they are being hired back next year, but the district is now looking for an "Assistant Superintendent" which I thought was a position they eliminated a year ago in order to save money. So that most likely will be another $180,000 + that could have been saved or used for something else, but instead will go to one of the administration's puppets. What a joke

The Assistant Superintendent position being filled makes me angry. I believe the job was being done "under the covers" with no additional salary anyway so filling it officially again doesn't surprise me. Please don't everyone get back on the Governor bandwagon of "he made all these cuts" when the district is spending money like this.

You may want to contact the superintendent. I did to ask why we would be spending this additional money. They actually put me through to her and she explained that there is currently someone doing this job with a different title. Changing the title will let this person evaluate more people than they are allowed to now. I specifically asked if this was an additional person or a changing of title and responsibility. I was told no additional people.

No additional people but the person doing the job now will be able to get the salary for the job they are doing. That equals spending money.

Don't they need a committee to appoint someone as important as an Asst Superintendent? They did that last time. Can they just decide to move them into a job like this and give them more money? Is this person getting more $? Did they hire the principals? Did they pay them what the currant people are getting paid? And why are we outsourcing again? Do they think we're stupid enough to believe that outsourcing will cost less than two people's salaries? Didn't we try that with custodians or something like and we got taken? Maybe the people losing their jobs shouldn't be teachers and aids, it should be DelSordie and Hayes. That's close to $400 in salaries! BTW, which one is really running (ruining?) the show?
