Help for Haiti Telethon a Night of Energy and Importance

The telethon was held at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School.

 

After much anticipation, the clubs of Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School finally got to hold their Help for Haiti telethon Wednesday night.

The event was originally scheduled for February 26, but was postponed due to snow. A month later, the students' energy and dedication to the relief efforts in Haiti were just as strong.

Their efforts were impressive.

The students scheduled a wide variety of performances for viewers, including SP-F High bands, the NJ Heat All-Star cheerleading squad and a student vs. teacher volleyball game (students won). There were also speakers and on-screen interviews with students and faculty.

Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr and a Scotch Plains-Fanwood High staffer even allowed themselves to be locked up for the effort. The two took calls in an area enclosed by a grate as part of "Jail n' Bail." Viewers were asked to provide "bail money" to free them. The bail was set in the vicinity of $600. 

Locals either attended the event in-person or watched it from their homes on SPTV or streaming online.

In addition to the telethon and the entertainment in the gym, there was also a food court and tricky tray. The high school was able to find a lot of sponsors for the event, including Alfonso's Pizzeria, Café Vivace, Gennaro's, Italian Village, La Casa, Nunzio's, South Street Café, SPFHS Cafeteria, and TGI Fridays. The Bath Connection, Chelsea Assisted Living, Double Dipper Café, Jesus Embroidery, John's Meat Market, Look Twice, Park Avenue Printing, Scotch Plains Music Center, Shear Magic, Shear Precision, Sweet Lew's Bakery, and The Mattress Factory also donated gifts.

The event was a joint effort of all the clubs at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School.  The students of Amnesty International, AV Club, Black Student Union, Blue Diamond Step Squad, Cheerleaders, Dance Team, French Club, Gay Straight Alliance, Italian Club, SALSA, and Students Concerned for the Needy all pulled together to make it happen.

All money raised from the event is being donated to the American Red Cross Haiti relief efforts. While the students had hoped to contribute their efforts sooner, they said they recognize that relief efforts are ongoing and their money is still very much needed.
