UPDATE, 8:39 a.m.: In a phone interview with Patch, Clark Police Chief Alan Scherb said that police are now certain, based on information they found overnight, Alongi left her home voluntarily and no abduction took place. She is still missing.
"She is currently still missing, but we are now confident she left voluntarily," Scherb told Patch. "No abduction, no foul play. We are now investigating this as a missing runaway juvenile."
Scherb says police are continuing to persue leads they found over the night as to Alongi's path and whereabouts, but could not reveal what those leads were as of yet, only stating that they are now certain she left voluntarily.
Scherb says Alongi has not contacted police or her family.
Original Story, 7 a.m.
Kara Alongi, the 16-year-old Arthur L. Johnson junior who tweeted "There is somone in my hour ecall 911" before disappearing Sunday evening, is still missing Monday morning according to Clark Police.
"We still don't know whether she ran away or if there was any foul play," Clark Police Chief Alan Scherb told Patch as police investigated Alongi's home on Hall Drive last night. "There are no obvious signs of a break-in and the home was not ransacked. The door was open. Kara, if you see this, please contact your parents or Clark Police. You will not be in trouble. We are concerned for your safety."
A group of about 20 of Alongi's family, friends and neighbors stood waiting outside the home late into the evening as police were photographing and investigating, while at the same time the search for Alongi went viral on Twitter. At one point in the evening, #helpfindkara was the number three Twitter trend worldwide and her Twitter profile now has more than 90K followers.
A canine unit from the Sheriff's Department was called in, but Scherb says the dog picked up her scent and walked the neighborhood but was broken off after not finding a further trail. Scherb would not confirm whether or not Alongi's phone was found in the home.
A friend of the family says Alongi's family was at her younger brother's sporting event at the time and Alongi was home alone. Alongi's grandmother, Toni Alongi, describes her as respectful, sensitive, and says it is not like her to run away.
Anyone with any information about Alongi's whereabouts should call Clark Police at 732-388-3434.
We will continue to check in with Clark Police and will update this story as more information becomes available.

Good, and when they do find her she should be arrested and charged with creating a false public alarm. Just look at some of her tweets, snotty stuck up, rude, teenager who thinks the world is all about her and needs a reality check.

No Joe. Instead of thinking that - wonder what is in the mind of a young 16 year old, that may feel so desperate and lost to leave home, potentially allude to a kidnapping, why did she reach a "breaking point". Have a little compassion. It's not easy being young in today's world.

First of all, I'd like to point out that the police have never, ever been wrong before. They always know exactly what happened, and therefore, we should stop looking for this girl to make sure she's safe and continue the lynch mobs that have formed online calling for her to be killed and kidnapped, beaten, "taught a lesson", etc.
I mean, threatening a troubled girl (which you would have to be to fake something like this) always has great outcomes and never leads to suicide or self harm.

I hope they are right, otherwise we, not only the parents should get all the police department fired. Poor kid, if she has done all of this its in name of attention. My home is opened to her anytime. Joe Dellaragione, are you sure you are not the one who might be involved in this??? You are so rude!

Society rewarding people for pulling idiotic stunts like this is just absurd too me. Instead of you people right away inferring she must have a 'problem', why don't you think of the adverse? Who's to say she isn't just doing this for attention? To gain some twitter followers and compassion from her community and peers? What makes you people right and Joe D wrong? In which case this is a crime. Concentrating police, resources, and money in order too try to find a girl who had claimed to have been kidnapped is not something that should be taken lightly. Why reward her for potentially doing a bad deed such as this??

I think that everyone is honestly hoping that she either comes home on her own or is found unharmed and safe. But the anger from everyone also stems from the young girl's tweets and her popular, yet quite negative reputation around school. It's a shame that this is happening and I hope for her family's sake, everything turns out positively and that help can be gotten where it's needed.

i agree. I have no relationship to her, my friend is the next door neighbor. I can tell you that all of you adults should be ashamed of yourselves. shes 16 years old. Do you remember what it was like at 16? I do, and all these grown people should really take a look at themselves. She still isn't home. Regardless if she ran away or what. I'm sure if it was any of your family members you wouldnt be sitting here bashing them like this.

I hate all of you rude jackasses.. I shake my head at you all. Pull your head out of your bottom & think outside the box. Whether kidnapped or a runaway, we'll never truly know. Her previous tweets? Seem like every other teenage girls tweets that I know. Instead of judging a girl you know NOTHING about besides what she previously tweeted, just feel bad shes feeling this low with her life & hope she comes home safe.

No, we don't know the full story... yet we are allowed to comment, and we all do, from our own perspectives. This is the media. If the contents of her past tweets are any indication, I would be one of those she made fun of... I do pray that she is found, but I don't believe she should be just patted on the back like nothing ever happened. Whatever reason she felt she had draw attention to herself, should be addressed and she should be made to face those who so ardently were looking for her and face what she has put her family and her community through.

I agree Debbie and U., i hope she is found, but she does need to face consequences for making a false alarm. it is not right to do that. feel for her parents, i been there with a runaway teen many years ago and it is the worst feeling in the world. I pray she is safe, it is a bad world out there, but when found, she needs to face what she did....

she needs to face punishment she commited a federal offense. when she is found and in jail everybody will know where she is. She is not missing. She left. There are 1000's of children that are "missing" do you know what that means? She left on her on to face the world. If she can more power to her. She is legal to be on her own and make her own decisions. Putting a the world on a panic attack over one girl when you are used to seeing "missing" kids on milk cartons.

No one here is being rude except the people throwing insults around. The fact is, resources are wasted when someone runs away and causes a panic like this and they should not get off free. Also, think of the poor kid she accused of being a stalker. He now has a lot of things to deal with because of the poor way this was handled. I get it, it is hard being a teen, but causing widespread panic and bringing others down is not the way to go about it. I hope they find her soon and address the problems she's having, but thinking she should get off without punishment is naive.

Yea if it wasnt true thats really mean & yes EVERYTHING YOU DO HAS CONSEQUENCE, so if she doesnt get anything for this its not right otger kids who are REALLY kidnapped never had this much attention. My heart goes out to this girls parents and my hat is off to melissa for being a level headed, honest teenager. How naive are some of you, thinking this prank is ok? "For whatever her reason" isn't good enough. This appears to be a well planned, thought out execution to get what she wants without regard for all the parties involved. Would it be ok to call in a bomb threat in a theater, cause a panic and use resources to get attention or pull off an alternative motive? You bet they'd hunt that person down and there would be prosecution of some kind. My problem is that this is 2012. Teens have resources to work out their problems. Help groups. Peer groups. Support groups. These are even anonymous if online. Chat groups. Then why do you condone this girls actions? Too many teens have a parent given sense of entitlement, no consequences. I pity this generation. Their future will be distorted. Whatever happened to helping family, working and plain old respect?? God bless you Melissa and the best in the future.

I'm a teen myself and nothing NOTHING would lead me to do something as crazy as this. Wether she wants attention or who the hell knows why she ran away she should get some type of punishment. How can you put your parents and friends through this? Especially your parents. I feel bad for them. Stop tweeting for this girl, she will return home when she wants to. There could be many reasons why she ran away, maybe she's pregnant or did something so bad she doesn't want to get in trouble and figured when she came home everything would be ok. I have zero sympathy for her.

Then you obviously haven't been in the same situation as her or were perhaps raised differently than her......but don't say you have no sympathy for her....you have no idea what her reasons were - if this was your best friend, would you say the same thing? People do things for many different reasons, you have no idea the decisions people make unless YOU are in there shoes and have to make those decisions too......hopefully you never have anything bad happen in your life....you don't seem well equiped to tolerate it....just saying....maybe you have a very sheltered life....such a shame, not everyone has things as easy as you....

In my experience, it's the well off whitebread teenage girls who have the most problems. Yes, her tweets are abhorrent, so are those of 30% of young adults. (And some not so young.)
The bigger problem I see here, is the poor young boy, obviously with a crush, that's been dragged into this whole thing.
When she's found safe, I would expect every person that pointed a finger to apologise to him.
Yeah, not likely.

Hey I pray for people who are actually missing, who are actually in danger. This girl created such a big fuss just because she wanted to leave her house, now they see a video of her at the train station alone with a bag. I don't pray for her since the police could be investigating actual crimes helping people who actually need their help, then to be wasting their time and money with a selfish girl who just wants attention. They need to make an example of her and make sure that other teens across the country don't try to copy her.

Maybe it should be seen as a cry for help....maybe she was being abused or something and she found a time that she could make a statement and run.....if you've never been in that situation, than you wouldn't understand. This might have been the first time she was able to be alone and flee....stop being so hard on her, her anger might be a reaction of the way she was being treated at home or by friends.....abuse comes in all different ways and we all react differently to it. SOMETHING made her do this......don't be so judgemental until you know for sure....
Mr monde
8:40 am on Tuesday, October 2, 2012
you have good points but if the case is her getting abused at home you find someone to help you how bout that grandma in the article go to her and tell her whats going on you dont stage a kidnapping...I was a kid once and in my opinion if she really wanted to get away she would not have tweeted something about a kidnapper you would just leave without alarming anyone..she obviously wanted something about her future actions to be known
Olivia
12:34 am on Wednesday, October 3, 2012
agree with mr monde, if she truly wanted to escape a situation like abuse in the household, why make a tweet about a kidnapper? that just draws more unnecessary attention (already have attention from running away in the first place) and bringing police into the picture implies you want to be found...why would you want to be found if you're escaping? Unless she wanted to get the police involved to help her in her situation, in that case she could go straight to the police herself not tweet about it for everyone to see.
On another note I'd just like to emphasize that we know for a fact she did willingly leave...I don't understand why people are still discussing or even mentioning the possibility of her getting kidnapped. Unless there is some elaborate conspiracy plan thing going on where she had to stage this because she got herself in a bad situation, but that's a hollywood movie. It looks like (from the facts given to us) that for a cry for attention she posted a fake tweet and then left for who knows what reason.
I do sympathize for the fact she is still missing because I don't know how she's coping on her own or where she's staying, what she's encountered, what she's going through, what she's feeling etc and clearly something must be wrong for her to pull a stunt like this. However once she's found, consequences must be put in place for what she's caused internationally - financially, emotionally with the tweet.

I hope this girl makes it home. From the picture taken by the camera at the train station she is prepared to stay away for awhile. She had NO idea what she is in for if she's planning to hit the streets. I wonder if she went to NYC? Bad move if she did. The pimps are waiting for little girls like her. So apparently they have found her. NJ State Police picked her up walking along the side of the NJ Turnpike by Exit 1 yesterday afternoon and she's been reunited w/her family. I am happy for her family and her friends. And a HUGE thanks should go out to the law enforcement officers, all of them, who assisted in the search for her.
