Letter to the Editor: Frequent Patch Commenter Provides his take on the History of the Republican Party (PART 3)
Patch commenter, Holden Magroin, supplies background and links to some of the Scotch Plains' Republican Party's history over the last 16 years.
This is the final part of a three part letter, which was broken up due to length.
Find Part One Here and Part Two Here.
Yesterday I shared the history of how opinions on our surplus seem to change depending on who is in power and what happens to candidates who go against the party leadership and their friends.
Today I will share some of the public statements and actions of the current candidate for mayor, as well as the predicted letters that come to the editor each year.
Below are some of the public statements and actions from the current Republican mayoral candidate towards the electorate.
When discussing approving our town’s entering into an agreement on insurance coverage, the following exchange took place;
“Council members said they were unsure whether the JIF offered the best deal for the township. But they said that the deal appeared reasonable and, given the deadline, argued in favor of approving JIF membership.”…. Glover, however, said he disagreed. "Let's make this simple," he said, "if you want to buy a car, and you get a price, you don't just accept that price. You do due diligence. If there's a better price out there, you have to get it. We are obligated to get the better price."
In the same article, there was a discussion on who should pay for taxpayers to be on the “do not knock” list. Councilwoman DePaola originally advocated for the taxpayers to foot the bill.
"I think citizens should pay for stickers," Councilwoman Mary DePaola said. Instead of paying for a sticker, it was proposed that solicitors be required to buy the list. "It's fine," DePaola responded, "as long as someone is being charged."
The topic of cell tower placement has also brought reaction from our citizens. Again, when confronted with a choice for citizen advocacy or revenue to the town, Councilwoman DePaola has chosen the latter.
“Councilwoman Mary DePaola voiced strong support for approving MetroPCS's proposal.
"We should pursue this immediately, look into it as a source of revenue, and not let this opportunity slip away," she said.
After Malool noted that the tower, due to its location, likely would not replace or serve as an alternate to T-Mobile's proposed 120-foot tower at Willow Grove Swim Club, DePaola said, "We would have two? Even better."

As representatives from NJ American Water attended the council meeting soon after the water main break on Portland Ave., the following is taken from the article on that meeting.
“……members of the public and council members addressed questions and comments to the representatives.
They were ultimately asked by Mayor Mary DePaola to confine their questions and comments to a minimum due to the length of the discourse.
“After repeatedly being asked what more could be done to aid the affected residents, the overall sentiment of the evening, both from NJAW representatives and DePaola, was that it is no one’s responsibility but that of the homeowners’ insurance companies.
“This is a private matter between you and your insurance company, and at this point, we’re not liable,” DePaola said after Barbara Barone of 2081 Portland Avenue, Scotch Plains asked who would pay for damages to her home and belongings.”
http://scotchplains.patch.com/articles/water-main-break-questions-addressed-at-town-council-meeting
In what the Republicans have termed as an act to grab headlines, Councilman Glover was on the scene of the water main break and provided the following quotes;
“I was pleased to be here, having overheard one of these conversations going on, to be able to unwind it for the citizens,” Glover said.
Glover said several firms came through the area asking residents to sign documents that would allow them to clean affected residents’ homes. He said several residents unwittingly signed these documents, thinking the workers might represent official firms from the township or contracted with NJAW.
“The wonderful thing is that the community really–the neighbors–rallied around their neighbors, offering whatever support they could do, offering their homes, consoling them, lending a physical presence where necessary. So it’s something I’m very proud of,” Glover said.
“It speaks to the folks when they come out for no other reason than to want to help,” he continued.

This brings me back to how I won my $5 that I mentioned in my first piece. Letters to the editor by Republican Committee people who identify themselves as an “SP resident” or “a senior citizen” without saying they’re involved in the campaign have become standard operations.
In the first letter, the author fails to say he is a leader of the DePaola campaign and in the second letter; the author fails to say she is the current Treasurer of the Republican Committee. The third letter is from former Mayor Papen who’s still a current Republican Committeeperson discussing sewer flow, and if you remember, she knows a lot about sewer flow from her time on the RVSA.

Former Mayor Papen enjoys writing lots of letters during election time.
This letter by her from 2006 calls for the press to investigate a “rumor”.
http://www.goleader.com/06oct19/06oct19.pdf (page 4 – letters to editor)
Current candidate for mayor, Mary DePaola also writes letters to the editor. The page linked below was written 10 months prior to her first run for council. She not surprisingly slams Councilman Glover and calls for a bi-partisan council and it was probably the kick-off of her campaign.

There’s more, but I only had an hour to Google a few word combinations from my memory of these events that I’ve shared over the last 3 days.
While we are asked to vote for candidates on the ballot, I believe that we’re voting for the real power that stands behind the candidates. Based on the local history of this group and how incumbents are thrown aside if they do not tow the line, I ask you to consider who you are really voting for and who’s interests they are looking out for.

I'm voting for Glover because Malool did a terrific job helping me resolve an issue I was having with the town and I don't like how she was thrown under the bus, despite how it's being spun now. Nevertheless, and with all due respect for the great work you did here, Holden, none of this jumps out at me as being particularly troubling. (I'm even inclined to agree with her regarding the water main break.) To put it differently, even if Marks is calling the shots, are the shots any better or worse than the alternative? Now would be a good time for Glover to step forward and define how he'll do things differently. DePaolo came to my house a few Saturdays ago and followed it up with a mailing, but unless I was out, Glover hasn't. Yet his party has a huge hurdle in town: for the 50 years from the end of WW1 to the 60's, the town was overwhelmingly Republican, by a 2-to-1 margin at times. After slowly gaining seats in the late ‘60’s, the Dems finally won a majority on the council (right after it changed from a Township Committee in '72) from 1974-1978, but we were a very different town back then so you can’t judge their performance now. . In 1978 the GOP took over again and basically owned the council for 20 years, since the only Dems who won in the 80's were Spatola and Boright in '85, and Spatola turned Republican in '87 before becoming a judge at the end of the decade. From '88 to '98 the GOP again had a lock on the council until the '98 surprise sweep of Donatelli, Samuel and Bromley, but this only lasted 10 months, since Republican Rossi was elected to fill the spot opened by Donatelli's passing. In 2000 Coronato's win cemented the GOP's power, the mayorship was divested from the council, and Marks became mayor. Rossi, Malool, and Sorge's wins gave the GOP total control again in 2002 and that lasted till Glover and Strauss came in as a minority in 2006. The rest I'm sure everyone knows. The point being, there’s little here that clearly shows the difference between the vision of SP the competing parties have. And that’s not your job to articulate, it’s theirs. I know the Dems read this, so have at it.
Oh, and my ears seal shut when either party raises the issues of “high taxes” or “open government.” The Dems claimed their ’98 win was due to those, and then the GOP gave the exact same reasons for their takeback in 2000. Let’s hear a new song.

As a Republican what is truly sad is that, at a time when the party as a whole needs to be rebuilt if only to serve as a check on Democratic dominance on the state and county levels (and to propertly represent suburban interests too often ignored), this simply serves to remind those who might otherwise be inclined to vote Republican of the notion that there is no true difference between the two parties in terms of who they ultimately serve.
And there is a certain amount of irony in the fact that, as a Fanwood resident, I almost have to root for Mr. Glover's alliance with Mayor Mahr to win out over the SP Republicans and what I have seen them do over the fifteen years of my second go-around in this area.

Look Holden, Because I try to look at things with an open mind, I don't like being put in a position to have to defend people and the truth is your three part letter is chock full of inaccuracies and misinformation.
Most of these you mention items have been written about and answered by myself and other in the comment section of many of the Patch stories. Since you mention the ad nauseum even when corrected let's rehash, the comments you continue to skew from Mrs DePaola.
1) "I think citizens should pay for stickers," Councilwoman Mary DePaola said. Instead of paying for a sticker, it was proposed that solicitors be required to buy the list. "It's fine," DePaola responded, "as long as someone is being charged."
Of course you already know these comments are in reference to taxpayers footing the bill to set up a system stop solicitors from knocking on doors. Some people may not mind kids selling candy knocking on the front door and helping their cause. Who would want the town pay for whatever system invented just so people don't door knock? To paraphrase what she said so it's more clear for you "Wouldn't it make sense that someone other then the taxpers pay for it?" Mrs DePaola showed that she wouldn't spend money on something as it turns out solicitors now pay for.

2)“Councilwoman Mary DePaola voiced strong support for approving MetroPCS's (cell tower) proposal.
Like many Dems you run with the "If I tell a lie long enough everyone will believe it" crowd. The simple fact here is the tower the current cell antena sit on is being repaied and T-Mobile and Metro PCS MUST move them from PSE&G's tower.
Ahh but this move is just TEMPORARY. Mrs DePaola correctly surmized that SP residents using these carriers would enjoy having continued cell service from home, so before another town offered and we missed out on the revenue (between $250- $500,000 by my est) she correctly stated we should move quickly to secure these towers in SP while the repairs are being made to the PSE&G tower.
See it's not so sinister when you tell the truth.

I'm Holden MaGroin and this is for Tired.
1) Her first instinct was to charge people for not being harassed. It took others on council to steer her charging the solicitors. Again, when given a choice to advocate for the citizens, she does not.
2) Nice try. It was all about revenue with NO consideration of the citizens. Check your timeline. This discussion I reference had nothing to do with temporary cell towers. I will also remind you that she wrote a CYA letter to the editor a week later saying she was just being sarcastic and that the Patch reporter missed her tone. So no, you are confusing 2 different cell tower discussions and when DePaola was confronted, she again said, "I was just being sarcastic".
3) My point on the water break was not her lack of presence. It was when people had the water company at the town meeting, she cut them off. What you call disgusting with a coucilman being at the scene, I see as lending support.
We are of differing opinions on DePaola. I find her gut instinct is not to look out for what can be best for the taxpayers. I don't believe that the majority of taxpayers don't have to consider costs when making a decision. She seems to not have that concern based on her judgements and actions.
I'm definetly NOT Glover or a dem committee puppet. I think they will lead better than the Marks' puppets, but I will hammer them just as hard for dumb decisions.
If you will better and want a chuckle...here, pull my finger.

3) As for the water main break - Holden you know full well Mrs DePaola was out of town on vacation at the time. The water main was old and nothing you or I say or do could change the fact that it gave way. What Mr Glover did was get some face time in an election year at a time people felt vunerable. I find that disgusting. Also, who in their right mind would sign a document from anyone without speaking to a lawyer or their insurance company first?
Holden you used to have retorts that gave people a chuckle and more then not some keen observations. Where's that guy? It's obvious from your letter you're either Kevin Glover or the Dem Committee's puppet

Every assertion made by Holden is backed up by a link that proves his point. I am no fan of Kevin Glover as I think both he and Mr. Vastine have egos that cannot be contained in a room the size of the council chambers. They are both big bags of wind. However, Ms. DePaola as Mayor will be a surrogate for the old Republican leadership. If she ever had an original idea, it would die of loneliness.

Barney - The assertations are quotes that are then open to interpretation and context. While I agree with you about the egos of Glover and Bo the money keeper, I believe Mrs DePaola can and will handle the position quite well. You never told us, are your marching orders from Lou Berkmann?

Another apologist said she uses hyperbole.

Dear Mr. Jackson, as I understand the situation, Councilman Marcus was there the morning of the water main break as well. Difference was that he was there to observe not get credit. I also understand from the televised council meeting regarding the break, that Glover was asked to leave the area because he was a hindrance to those trying to fix the problem.
Also, and I admit that this was relayed second hand, I heard that Glover recommended to at least one homeowner that they get their basement pumped out prior to the water company offer to do so, which left her with the out of pocket expense. Had she not listened to Glover it would have been done for free.
Lastly, I also have the understanding that after the emergency had been dealt with, and there was no longer crews trying to fix the problem, Mayor DePaola did reach out to the residents of the neighborhood to see the damage firsthand and offer assistance if possible.
Glover shows up to get credit for being there yet he creates more problems for the crews and residents. Wow, with leadership like that God help us!

Also one other comment on Glover's health care. I don't think part timers and volunteers for the town should get healthcare. But this benefit has been in place for eons. This benefit was enjoyed by every council person probably since the beginning of time. Both Democrats and Republicans enjoyed this benefit. That being Marks, Malool, Samuel, Schmidt, Pappen, and all the rest. I am glad that the town eliminated the benefit. But I am glad it was grandfathered in. I think it is unfair to any employee to take away something mid stream. And now that Glover is the only person and the last to receive this benefit it is disengenious at best. And Hypocritical at most to raise this issue now. Where were all these complainers years ago when all 5 council members were getting healthcare.

When Glover says "WE CAN DO BETTER" what he means is you can do better, he is already doing better to the tune of over $100k in free benefits for him and his family. I guess that is why he said "WE ARE BETTER OFF THAN WE WERE FOUR YEARS AGO" when speaking at the Dems pizza party / Obama love fest during the convention. From the top of the ticket down, they continue to take from one to give to another, or as is the case with Glover, give to himself.
