Scotch Plains Blotter: Car Taken From Driveway, Warrant Arrests and Credit Card Fraud

The following information was provided by the Scotch Plains Police Department. Arrests do not indicate convictions.

 

 

November 5, 2012:

 

 

Marvin Harris Age. 53 of Avenel was arrested for a $1,100 outstanding warrant issued by the Scotch Plains court.  Officer Silva stopped Harris for a motor vehicle violation on East Second St. and discovered the warrant.  He was transported to H.Q. where he was processed and released.

 

November 5, 2012:

 

 

A resident of Crestwood Road reported being a victim of Fraud.  He stated he made a purchase over the internet when the unknown suspect cashed the payment and did not deliver the correct item that was to be sold.  

 

 

November 8, 2012: 

A resident of Edgewood Terrace reported that sometime overnight unknown suspect(s) removed his vehicle which was parked in the driveway.


 

November 9, 2012: 

A resident of Park Place reported being a victim of Fraud.  She stated that unknown suspect(s) removed several hundred dollars from her debit card without her authorization.   


 

November 9, 2012: 

Stephen Caprari Age. 29 of Gilette was arrested for a $1,250 outstanding warrant issued by the Wall court.  Officer Lavery stopped Caprari for a motor vehicle violation on Front St. and discovered the warrant.  He was transported to H.Q. where he was processed and released.

 

November 10, 2012: 

A resident of Watchung Terrace reported being a victim of Fraud.  He stated that unknown suspect(s) made approximately $900 in purchases on his credit card without his authorization.

I get a laugh every time I read that so and so was arrested for an outstanding warrant which was discovered during an unrelated motor vehicle violation. Really! No, the police have cameras that automatically read license plates and automatically scan all law enforcement records for connections to outstanding violations. The officer is then alerted to pull over the suspect vehicle and investigate further. That's OK with me. The next step will be cameras everywhere with facial recognition capability to identify individuals with outstanding warrants. That's OK with me. But think about the power that this gives police. That's OK with me. Until it is abused. Let's say a police officer has a grudge against an individual and through some means gets that individual's license plate onto the data base that classifies him as a problem. The next thing the "problem" individual will be ticketed for going 26 mph in a 25 mph zone, etc. The opportunity for abuse of this technology scares me. Who will police that system?

I get a laugh every time someone posts a paragraph on somthing that they do not have any idea on what they are tlaking about. Scotch Plains police do not have cameras that scan license plates. The only cameras are the ones that record motor vehicle stops. The license plate readers are cameras that are mounted on top of the vehicles roof by the light bar...I haven't seen any of them on SPPD'S cars. As far as abuse of technology that is handled by the state police and the att. general's office.
