Scotch Plains Man Shot in Home During Armed Robbery

Two suspects have been arrested and charged in connection with an armed robbery that occurred at an Emil Place residence in Scotch Plains.

Alquan Green, 18, and Charles Darby, 18, both of Plainfield, have been arrested in connection with an armed robbery and aggravated assault to Scotch Plains man that occurred at approximately 10 a.m. on Friday, February 3 in his home on Emil Place in Scotch Plains.

The victim, a 19-year-old male stated that he was home with a relative when two men knocked on the back door. After opening the door, the two suspects gained entry and demanded that the victim surrender his phone, while ransacking part of the residence and attempting to remove other electronic devices.

One of the suspects, produced handgun, shot the victim once in the knee and fled the scene with the other suspect. The suspects made away with an iPhone valued at $200. Fanwood Rescue Squad responded to the scene. The victim was taken to Overlook Hospital where he was treated and released.

Captain Brian Donnelly of the Scotch Plains Police Department stated that the victim did not know, nor is he linked to his assailants and while the incident is still under investigation, it does not appear to be linked to any other crimes in the community.

“The victim did not struggle, we have no idea why he was shot,” Donnelly stated. “He is in a lot of pain, but the doctors expect that he will make a full recovery.”

The Scotch Plains Detective Bureau also responded to the scene immediately following the robbery. After interviewing several people and collecting evidence, arrest warrants were issued for Green and Darby.

Scotch Plains Detectives tracked down the suspects by canvasing the area of surrounding the scene. Ultimately, it was a resident tip that led Scotch Plains and Police to track down the getaway vehicle driven by the suspects that lead to the arrest.

Green was arrested at 6:30 p.m., on February 5, in Plainfield. He was transported to Scotch Plains where he was processed and charged with Robbery in the first degree, Aggravated Assault in the Second degree and multiple weapons offenses.  He was processed and then transported to the Union County jail in lieu of bail that was set by the Scotch Plains Municipal Court Judge at $140,000.  Mr. Green is scheduled to appear in the Union County Superior Court on February 10, 2012.

Charles Darby was arrested at 12:30 a.m., on February 7, in Plainfield. He was transported to Scotch Plains where he was processed and charged with Robbery in the first degree and multiple weapons offenses. He was processed and then transported to the Union County jail in lieu of bail set by the Scotch Plains Municipal Court Judge at $100,000.  Mr. Darby is also scheduled to appear in the Union County Superior Court on February 10, 2012.

“You know your neighborhood best. It was through keen observances by residents that we tracked these suspects down. If you see something suspicious, give us a call. We follow up on every report,” Donnelly stated.

The bail for two guys suspected of shooting a homeowner in his own house was only $100K and $140K? 10% gets you out, so if they had $14K they'd be on the streets, hours AFTER SHOOTING A HOMEOWNER. What happened to gun charges? It will take you 4-10 weeks for an upstanding citizen to get a permit to buy a gun in F or SP, but you can shoot someone and get bail???

10 weeks not likely....expected longer to get a permit. What the heck is the term "actor"? The use of this way too PC term makes me SICK!

Respectfully, Armed Robbery is a first degree crime. Pursuant to the Statewide bail schedules as approved by the Administrative Office of the Courts, you cannot be released on 10% bail for a first degree crime. The bail range is $100,000 to $250,000. The article does not indicate whether the bail was bondable.

Thank you for that information, Mr. Russo.

Home Invasion?

Congratulations on fine policework. I'm glad you were able to get these dirtbags off the streets quickly.

Is this Scotch Plains's first shooting since somebody got shot behind Amnesia (or whatever it was called at the time) 10 or so years ago? Unlike in that one, something's odd about this story. Emil Pl is a sidestreet off a sidestreet not far from the Westfield/SP border. It's as tough a road to find as any in Scotch Plains, and it feels isolated despite being right by the new Heather Glen housing development. Are thugs from Plainfield now coming all the way across town to conduct home invasions on random houses? I also wonder if this had anything to do with what looks like gang graffiti on the corner of Jerusalem and Johnson at the garage.

It's a drug house! They come & go all hours of the day and night. SP Police know it and do nothing about it....
This wasn't a home invasion....this was a drug deal gone bad or they knew the victim had drugs and/or money at the home and they wanted an easy score....come on people wake up!

UPDATE: Scotch Plains Police are stating that this is was not a random act. The house was targeted, but Police are still investigating the link between the suspects and the home.

When it comes to violent crime like this, bail should be enormous!
Criminals have guns - no matter how many gun laws the government burdens the honest everyday citizen, it does nothing to stop a criminal from getting and using a gun. The honest, law abiding citizens of NJ should be allowed to carry guns, because Police don't stop crime like this, they only investigate it afterwards.

To carlmarcus. The term "carry guns" implies in your car, walking down the streets, in stores, in public in general. Don't know that I want the wild west for resurface.....especially with all the road rage and general lack of civility we now see in society. Having a gun in one's house for self defense in situations such as this is a completely different matter. The second ammendment to the Constitution was not intend to allow us to defend ourselves from each other, but, rather to defend our freedom against our own Government and others set on taking away our society's freedom. The Japanese made a decision in WW II not to invade the USA because "there was a gun in every house". I am fearful that the concept of "gun carrying" right may eventually lead to more gun control and the real purpose of the 2nd ammendment may be defeated.
