SPFHS Boys and Girls Varsity Soccer Teams Honored For Outstanding Seasons
Three resolutions were passed at the Jan. 17 council meeting to congratulate the Girls co-county champions and Boys county champion teams.
The Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School Boys and Girls’ Varsity soccer teams played outstandingly for the 2012 season, leading the boys to win the county championship and the girls to be a county co-champion.
Since both teams performed so well this season the Board of Education felt it appropriate to honor their achievements in official board resolutions. The first two resolutions passed acknowledged the achievements of both teams wishing them continued success.
A third resolution was also passed honoring Boys Varsity Player, Colin Stripling, for being named All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
The 2012 Boys Varsity Soccer team won 19 games, lost 1 and tied three games this season. The team defeated Governor Livingston High School on Oct. 26 at Kean University for the County title.
Within the past 15 years the SPFHS Boys Varsity Soccer team won the county title 9 times and competed in the county finals 13 times.
Head coach of the boys’ team, Tom Breznitsky, said that team definitely should have made it to a state championship, however he said that sometimes in soccer and hockey the best team doesn’t always win.
“This was my 38th season and I truly believe that this was without a doubt the best team we ever had at Scotch Plains,” Breznitsky stated.
He went on to congratulate the girls’ team for their accomplishments this season and noted how the two teams have developed a good relationship from sharing the varsity field for practices.
The 2012 Girls Varsity Soccer team shared the title of County Champion with Westfield high school after tie in the county tournament held at Arthur L. Johnson High School. The Girls held a record of 18 wins, 2 losses and three ties.
Looking back at the past 8 years, the SPFHS Varsity Girls Soccer team competed in 8 county championships, winning 7 of them.
Scotch Plains-Fanwood High Schools’ athletic director Ryan Miller stated that for so many in Scotch Plains and Fanwood it is often hard to believe that some schools don’t make it to the county championship every year, because for SPFHS it is so normal.
The process of being normal, he added, comes from the great coaches and parents and the support of the community to make both soccer teams what he calls; one of the greatest soccer organizations in the SPFSA.
Miller told the athletes, “it takes the top one percent and that’s what you are in this room, you are the top one percent of an incredibly strong soccer organization in your community, you represent it well.”
Each member of both the girls and boys’ teams were called to the podium and awarded a certificate for their hard work and dedication.
