Who's Your Favorite SPF Teacher?
Help us celebrate National Teacher Appreciation Week by telling us about your favorite teachers in Scotch Plains and Fanwood.
“Every day I am asked what the secret is to ensuring every child in New Jersey graduates from high school ready for college and career, and I always have one simple response – outstanding teachers.”
Those are the words of NJ Acting Commissioner of Education Christopher Cerf in a video address made available Monday on the state's website.
“I began my career as a high school history teacher, and I can honestly say that I never worked harder or felt more rewarded than I did during those four years. We as a state should make sure that we celebrate outstanding educators every day for their work with our children and for developing the next generation of leaders.”
In Scotch Plains and Fanwood, you can help celebrate local teachers who make a difference in our children's lives by sending your story about your favorite teacher to Scotch Plains-Fanwood Patch Editor Emily Everson at emily5988@gmail.com. You can also tell us in the comments OR upload a photo with caption to this story.
In addition to Patch, the New Jersey Department of Education is also looking for stories of outstanding teachers:
- Teacher Memory: This is a new feature of the state’s website where New Jersey residents can submit a memory of their favorite teacher, either past or present. These memories will be reflected on the Department’s website to demonstrate the important contribution that teachers make in each of our lives, even many years later. http://education.state.nj.us/feature/
- Teacher Spotlight: Each month, the Department will feature a different outstanding New Jersey teacher to recognize and reward their contribution in the classroom. The first teacher to be featured in this series is New Jersey Teacher of the Year – Jeanne DelColle. http://education.state.nj.us/feature/spotlight/12/05.php
A great teacher can change the course of many lives. Tell us about a teacher who changed your life or those of your children.

The BEST TEACHER EVER was Mrs. Haines - she taught 5th grade at Brunner Elementary School. She knew every subject inside and out, especially English and the proper use of it. She was a wonderful person as well. She gave me the fire to become an honor roll student and excel at many things in my adulthood.

Ms. Dina Mercier at Brunner Elementary School is absolutely amazing. Her work with Special Education students deserves recognition. Ms. Dina inspired us to take take charge of our child's Autism Spectrum Disorder & not let it take charge of us. You gave our child a great start with his education and he continues to make amazing progress everyday. You will always be one of the teachers that we will never forget. Thank you.....you are simply the best!
Hats off also to the many Special Education teachers & para professionals in the SPF district. Know that your are appreciated for your efforts!

THANK YOU! I am the fortunate one who gets to experience the "special" journey with so many families. It is rewarding to know that "my kids" continue to achieve so many goals as they move on through the district! Appreciate the kind words more than you know! ~Dina Mercier

I was very happy to see that Mrs. Shapiro's name is on this list. All of my children have had her and always loved being a part of her classes and choir concerts. At the time my children were in elementary school, I know that Mrs. Shapiro was running her class out of the gymnasium and still was able put out one of the best concerts I have seen at that grade level. My son is now going to school for Music Education and has said many times that his love for music has started at School One with Mrs. Shapiro. Thank you for being such a great educator to all!

DelPorto
Hi, I am in Mrs. DelPortos' 1st grade at School One. She is the best teacher! She is nice and is fun! She taught me math really well. Mrs. DelPorto is nice to all of the kids in my class. I wish she could be my second grade teacher too! She makes me feel happy and she laughs a lot! And I like that.

The best teacher is located at School One Elementary in the Scotch Plains- Fanwood school district and her name is Ms. DelPorto. As a parent and educator myself she has created an environment of respect and engagement in her class that has encouraged my twins to learn and strive to be lifelong learners. I want to extend my gratitude to Ms. DelPorto for all that she has done for her first grade class and specifically my twins.
Ms. DelPorto thank you for all that you do.

My son has the privilege of being a student in Ms. DelPorto's first grade class at School One in Scotch Plains-Fanwood district. She is wonderful! My son is on his way to becoming a great reader now and it is all because of her dedication, excellent encouragement and daily efforts to helping him towards success. I know that he is already sad that she will not be his teacher in second grade. To be honest, so am I. I hope she realizes what a blessing she has been in mine and my son's lives.
Thank you, Ms. DelPorto. What a difference you have made.
