Taking the SAT, going on college visits and filling out the college application form are all tasks college-bound students have to complete. But there are other necessary tasks students need to finish before they can sit back and wait for acceptance letters. Many schools ask students to include teacher recommendations with their application when applying, and that's something high school juniors should consider before leaving for summer break.

Ideally, you should make contact with your teachers before summer break, giving them ample time to write their recommendation. By contacting them early, you'll avoid the rush and hopefully will give them time to write a better-quality recommendation for you. The last thing you want to do is to leave the teacher recommendation for last. Popular teachers will receive numerous requests; all the more reason to get ahead of the pack.

It's fine to ask your teachers in person, and then follow up with a reminder email. It's also fine to remind teachers of some of your accomplishments, or achievements. 

Finally, follow up all recommendation letters with a brief thank you note to the teacher.
