NJ Spotlight Map: How Does Union County Stack Up With Recycling?

Data shows Union County rates for recycling dropping from 2008 to 2009.

Residents in Union County are doing a fare good job recycling their waste. In a county where 1,082,31 million tons of waste was generated, 54.1 percent was recycled according to the most recent numbers, according to NJ Spotlight's latest interactive map. Overall, New Jerseyans are recycling less of their waste than they did in the mid-1990s, data from the state Department of Environmental Protection show. At the peak, residents across the state were recycling 61 percent of what they discarded in 1996 and 1997. That number dropped to 57 percent statewide in 2009. Prior to the enactment of the state’s mandatory recycling law a quarter of a century ago, 10 percent or less of waste was recycled. The law initially set a goal of recycling 25 …

New Scotch Plains Pub Needs a Name: Got An Idea?

SP residents Michael Brennan and Joe Mortarulo are putting the finishing touches on their new Park Avenue pub and they need Patch readers to help them come up with a name.

Two years ago, five Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School graduates agreed that they needed to build a place for family and friends to gather in town. Six weeks from now, this "class act" will merge their considerable talents for the July 4 opening of a new Irish pub in town.  But before they can open the new spot at 450 Park Avenue, they need to find a name to place above the door. So to help inspire the community feel they're seeking, co-owners Michael Brennan and Joe Mortarulo want you to vote in the poll to decide what to name Scotch Plains’ newest pub.  “A lot of people go to Westfield or Cranford to find a restaurant where they can have a drink at the bar and eat with their families,” Mortarulo, who owns Sweet Waters Steakhouse in …

Readers' Choice: Mountainside Is THE Place to Staycation in Union County

The Trailside Nature Center and Echo Lake Park — two of the top three places to spend a day in Union County were in Mountainside!

Can't make it to the Poconos or the Shore? Out of cash for that plane ride to Paris? No worries. Just head for Mountainside. Two Mountainside destinations came in as the top vote-getters in Patch's Readers' Choice Staycation poll this past week. The Trailside Nature & Science Center led the pack. The Center is one of those rarities: an indoor AND outdoor delight that can entertain budding naturalists of all ages. In 2009, local mom Sheila Sayah wrote a glowing review of the Center on Patch: Minutes away from Cranford and located at 452 New Providence Road in Mountainside, Trailside is in Watchung Reservation.  From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., daily, the Trailside Nature Center is open for free.  Of the three levels, the biggest attraction for my …
