With the first two weeks of spring sports in the books, the teams that got off to a good start are in the drivers' seat, while the those who didn't, still have a chance to get into the thick of things before it's too late. Gov. Livingston The baseball team couldn't have started the season any better, earning a thrilling 7-6 victory over neighboring New Providence on opening day. Trailing 6-0 entering the final frame, GL rolled a seven thanks to John Jenning's three-run walk-off triple in the final at-bat to end the drama. The Highlanders added a 1-0 victory Thursday to their resume, defeating Scotch Plains behind junior hurler Joe Graziano, and are now 3-0 and ranked # 2 in the Star-Ledger Union County poll. The Scotch Plains-Fanwood boys swim team made history Sunday by taking home the first state title in the program's history. The Raiders, who were winless in six previous championship appearances, won over Princeton in a 90-80 stunner. The big story of the week belongs to the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Boys Varsity swimming team, who triumphed over Mountain Lakes 99-71 in the North Jersey Public B Semi-Final. The 14-1 Raiders are gunning for their first state title against undefeated Princeton in the State Championship this Sunday, February 27th at 10:30 a.m. at The College of New Jersey. The Union Catholic Boys indoor track team also enjoyed great success, taking home the silver at the Non-Public A Championships at the John Bennett Indoor Athletic Facility in Toms River. The Union Catholic High School boys won the Union County Championships last week at the Jersey City Armory. The boys, who also won the county relays earlier in the month, scored 56 points with individual titles from Allen Eke in the 800-meter. Marcus Sancho was second in the shot put as was the 4x400 relay team. The girls, meanwhile, placed third with 32 points. They were led by Alexis Cubbage, who took third in the 55-meter dash and fourth in the 400 meter run. The girls’ 4x400 team was fourth. Two unbeaten teams faced each other this week, and Scotch Plains-Fanwood came out on top. The boys' swim team stunned Bridgewater-Raritan, narrowly edging the Panthers 87-83 on Wednesday at the Somerset Valley YMCA in Bridgewater. Depth made the difference in the Raiders' victory. Scotch Plains Junior Greg Baliko won the 200 meter IM and 100 breast stroke in 1:06.65, pulling out both close races from Victor Luo. The Raiders rallied on the strength of a 1-2 finish in the 100 fly from Joe Dunn and Dan Napolitano, and a 1-3 finish in the 100 breaststroke from Baliko and Nick Sorace. The Raiders …
This week's standout game goes to the Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School wrestling team. Sophomore 285-pounder Anthony Tufaro won two bouts by second period fall, then knocked off Clifton’s Thomas Trommolen 2-1 to win the Union City Tournament title Saturday afternoon at Union City High School. Tufaro, who raised his record to 14-2, has lost to only New Providence unbeaten senior Zach Troutman 8-0 in a Jan. 8 dual meet and Newton senior Evan Chrustic 3-2 on Dec. 28 in the semifinals of the John Goles Tournament hosted by Warren Hills High School. Tufaro finished third in that tournament. …
The New Year began with some awesome highlights for both the Scotch Plains Fanwood and Union Catholic high athletic teams. Here's a list of some standout games and matches from both teams in the first full week of 2011: SCOTCH PLAINS-FANWOOD Wrestling: The Raiders continue to improve, winning three of four matches this week. The Raiders began by avenging a loss to New Providence last year with a 44-26 victory Wednesday night.
