The Brotherhood of Temple Sha’arey Shalom of Springfield is hosting a special Brotherhood Brunch on Sunday, April 15, 2012 at 10am, featuring guest speaker Rabbi Israel "Sy" Dresner, known as "the most arrested rabbi in America."
Rabbi Dresner, who was Temple Sha'arey Shalom's first full-time rabbi, was a civil rights activist who was part of the historic Interfaith Freedom Rides of the early 1960's--a group of interfaith clergy who journeyed by bus to integrate the South. It was a clash of segregation and social protest, and Rabbi Dresner was arrested and jailed four times. During this time of turmoil, he met and developed a warm friendship with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who subsequently visited Temple Sha'arey Shalom. Rabbi Dresner has been a civil rights advocate throughout his career. He retired in 1996. At the Brotherhood Brunch, he will share stories about those "freedom rides," the civil rights movement and his friendship with Dr. King. Larry Needleman, Brotherhood President, adds "Brotherhood is delighted to bring Rabbi Dresner back to our temple to speak about this important time in our country's history. He is an inspiration to us all." The community is invited to join us.
The event is free for temple Brotherhood members and their families; $5 for non-members. Please RSVP to the temple office at (973)379-5387 or office@shaarey.org.
