DESCRIPTION:Congregation Beth Israel in Scotch Plains will hold an open h
 ouse for prospective members on Sunday\, May 20\, 2012 from 11 am - 1 pm
 .&nbsp\; Clergy\, professional staff and lay leaders will be on hand to 
 give tours and answer questions about the synagogue and its Religious Sc
 hool.&nbsp\; Adults are invited to bring their children\, as there will 
 be a party for Religious School students running concurrently with the o
 pen house.&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Children may attend the party\, which will feat
 ure free hot dogs\, drinks and entertainment.&nbsp\;\nCongregation Beth 
 Israel is an egalitarian Conservative synagogue\, serving the religious\
 , cultural\, educational and social needs of congregants from Scotch Pla
 ins\, Fanwood\, Westfield and surrounding towns.&nbsp\; It has an active
  Sisterhood\, Men&rsquo\;s Club and youth group\, plus a wide array of p
 rograms\, ranging from adult education courses to social action opportun
 ities.&nbsp\;     Congregation Beth Israel&rsquo\;s Religious School was
  one of the first three congregations in North America to be designated 
 as a Framework for Excellence School by the United Synagogue of Conserva
 tive Judaism.&nbsp\; The Religious School offers classes from pre-school
  through 12th grade\, as well as special needs instruction.&nbsp\;\nSyna
 gogue membership is not required for programs through second grade. &nbs
 p\;   &ldquo\;The open house is a great way for people in the community 
 to learn about our synagogue and our school\,&rdquo\; said Susan Menaker
 \, co-chair of Congregation Beth Israel&rsquo\;s Member Relations Commit
 tee\, which is sponsoring the open house.&nbsp\; &ldquo\;We planned the 
 open house to coincide with our Religious School&rsquo\;s end-of-year pa
 rty so that prospective members could actually meet the parents and the 
 children who make up our synagogue family\,&rdquo\; Menaker said. &nbsp\
