Small Fire Closes Portion of Raritan Road Wednesday

Sections of the roadway are expected to remain closed throughout much of Wednesday.

A portion of Raritan Road was closed Wednesday morning after a large branch fell and took down wires causing a small fire, according to Scotch Plains Police.

The section, between Martine Avenue and Black Birch Road, is expected to remain closed throughout much of the day as utility crews work on repairs, according to an emergency alert sent Wednesday afternoon.

Because there is no access to Raritan Road west from Martine Avenue, police advise drivers to use Terrill Road to access Union County Vocational-Technical Schools.

Officers are posted along Raritan Road -- at Martine Avenue and Black Birch Road -- and only allowing utility and emergency vehicles access. "If you drive around barricades or a Police Officer, you may be summoned," according to the alert.

Cooper Road was opened earlier Wednesday allowing traffic to move from Martine Avenue to Terrill Road without a detour, but will be closed again Thursday for utility work.

Crews will close Cooper Road between between Terrill Road and Fenimore Thursday morning and shift the closure midday between Martine and Fenimore. Access to Ponderosa Park will be "sporadic," according to officials.
