American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification

When: July 15 - July 19, 2013 (Mon. - Fri.)
Time: 8am - 3pm
Where: Summit Area YMCA: 67 Maple St. Summit, NJ 07901
Cost: $350/member    $450/non-member

The class is open to participants who are 15 years of age by the last day of class.  Course includes Lifeguard, CPR/AED, and First Aid certifications.  Lifeguarding students must attend all classes in order to get certified.

To enroll in the Lifeguarding course, you must be able to demonstrate the following PRECOURSE SKILLS on the first day of the Lifeguarding course:

Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.

Tread water 2 minutes using legs only. Candidates should place their hands under their armpits.

Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using breaststroke or freestyle. The face may be in or out of the water. Goggles not allowed. Surface dive either feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards on their back with both hands on object and face out of the water to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.

If participant fails to meet the standards set by the American Red Cross, he/she may take the course again for an additional fee.
