Kean University Computer Science Student Joshua Lisojo awarded highly competitive AFCEA Scholarship

One of only nine graduate students selected nationally and the first ever at Kean University, Joshua Lisojo has been awarded an Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) Graduate scholarship.  This non-profit organization focuses on increasing knowledge in the fields of information technology, communications, and electronics in the armed forces sectors of defense, homeland security and intelligence.

The AFCEA scholarship rewards academic excellence, leadership, and potential to succeed, all of which Lisojo has exhibited in his career at Kean University.  The Perth Amboy resident completed his B.S. in Computer Science in May 2013, and will use the scholarship funds towards his Master’s in Computer Information Systems, with an expected graduation of May 2014.  Lisojo is enrolled in Kean’s 5-year BS/MS program, in which students complete their B.S. in Computer Science degree in 4 years, and attain their M.S. degree with an additional year’s coursework.

Lisojo has found a specialty in developing voice and gesture recognition software.  He and a partner developed a gesture recognition feature for the Microsoft Kinect (the add-on system for Xbox that allows control through motion sensing) during his junior year at Kean.  In his senior year, Lisojo was team leader for a group that developed an iPhone app, now available to the public.  Lisojo oversaw the app team by organizing the software development tasks, assigning roles to five team members, and providing a timeline for the group to follow during the 9-month project.  This app (fpc) is now available for download in the Apple iTunes store and allows access to records and photographs of all occupants of the First Presbyterian Cemetery, a historical graveyard in Elizabeth, NJ.

Lisojo had the opportunity to use his database design and programming skills this summer during an internship at Group i&i Consultancy in Union, NJ.  His position there was Junior Database Developer.  Other off-campus activities include being youth group leader at his community church as well as traveling, frequently to Puerto Rico, to visit family.  After receiving his Master’s, Lisojo looks forward to working in accessible and mobile computing applications and design.
