Night Themes for Summer Reading Programs at Scotch Plains Public Library - Register Now!

Scotch Plains Public Library is pleased to announce a full slate of Summer Reading programs and activities for teens, children and adults.  Day and evening events, structured around nighttime themes will include music, art, chess, special guests, parties, and of course, the chance to read and win prizes all summer!  Registration for children and teens begins at 9 a.m. on June 18, 2012 and is limited to Scotch Plains and Fanwood cardholders.  Registration for adults in
ongoing.

Children through grade 5 in the “Dream Big, Read!” program will set reading goals, record the time they spend reading, and will receive prizes when they check in at the library to log their time.  Special events include a Fancy Nancy Soiree, a magic show and family dance party, in
addition to story times, crafts and a sing-along.  Animal lovers have a chance to read to a dog and see and learn about animals that only come out at night!  Registration is in-person at the library.

Teens will “Own the Night” at the library this summer!  After registering through the library web site or in person, starting June 18th, participants entering grades 6 – 12 are invited to start the summer reading season at a black light party, complete with glow-in-the-dark balloon volleyball, refreshments, fortune telling and crafts.  They will wrap up the season with a chocolate night teen finale on August 13th.  In between, there will be thrills and chills when real ghost hunters and astronomers visit, and when we solve a grisly murder at Murder Mystery Night!  Registrants can sign up for Intensive middle school chess workshops and the chance to work with and learn from professional artists, and to enjoy a reading club and crafts projects.  They will set reading goals and win prizes for their reading and the book reviews they write.

The entire community is invited to enjoy a week of Star Wars activities, culminating in a visit from the 501st Legion, on July 20th.

Adults can get “Between the Covers” by launching their summer library season with Alfred Hitchcock Week.  Film maker Chris Messineo will speak at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 25, 2012 and the library will show Hitchcock films over the next two weeks.  Art workshops and artists’ receptions, stress relief and aromatherapy sessions, a book club, and a “Grow Your Own Gourmet Mushrooms” workshop are just some of the events to savor.  Adults can register by going to the events tab at http://www.scotlib.org or by visiting or calling the library.
