JCC hosts Biography of Jews in the U.S. for Seniors and Active Adults

The following information was provided by the JCC of Central Jersey.

Starting early March and running through April, the JCC of Central NJ will host a series of discussions for Seniors and Active Adults entitled A Biography of the Jewish Community and the Development of the U.S.  The first two sessions are scheduled for Monday, March 4 and Monday, March 11 from 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. at the JCC, 1391 Martine Avenue, Scotch Plains.

This series will be led by Irwin Katz, former educator and guidance counselor.  After serving as a guidance counselor for 23 years, Katz went on to teach junior high school social studies at both public and Jewish schools.  He has also served as a docent at the Rockland Holocaust Museum.

Katz plans to open the series with a biography of the American Jewish Community, focusing on the opportunities Jews have had in America.  He will then focus on specific timeframes, such as Jews’ roles in early exploration through the Revolutionary War, Jews in the north and south during the Civil War, the Great Immigration from 1890 and on and the role of American Jews in World Wars I and II. 

The other session dates are Monday, April 8 and April 22, Wednesday, May 8 and Monday, June 3.  All sessions are scheduled from 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.  This series is open to the community.  Sessions are $3 for JCC members and $6 for community participants.  Reservations must be made three days prior to each session.  Cost includes lunch.
