In Scotch Plains, a new council with the addition of Republican Llewellyn Jones will continue to discuss issues like the preservation of the town's historic Shady Rest.

Will the Scotch Plains and Fanwood police departments merge? The issue is still being discussed by both governing bodies, after much debate in the first public meeting presenting the merger.

In Fanwood, 2014 will bring a new skatepark and more development on Fanwood Crossing II, while 2013 brought the reopening of Fanwood landmark the Seafare Chippery.

The new year will also bring the first court appearance for the Fanwood gunman who shot at police in an 8-hour November standoff.
