Celebrate National Poetry Month With a Reading By Vievee Francis, April 16 at Kuran Arts Center

The Carriage House Poetry Series is in its fifteenth year at the Patricia Kuran Arts Center, an historic Gothic Revival structure that was once a 19th century carriage house, hence the name of the series.

The Carriage House Poetry Series invites the public to celebrate National Poetry Month in Fanwood at a free reading by the distinguished poet Vievee Francis on Tuesday, April 16. The featured reading will start at 8:00 p.m. in the Kuran Arts Center on Watson Road, off North Martine Avenue, adjacent to Fanwood Borough Hall (GPS use 75 N. Martine Avenue). An open mic reading will follow the featured performance.

Vievee Francis is a Texas-born, Michigan poet. For years she has been instrumental in fostering a literary community for youth and young adults in the Detroit area and now her presence has grown beyond the Michigan border. Her work has appeared in numerous journals and anthologies including Callaloo, Indiana Review, Rattle, Best American Poetry (2010) and the Norton Anthology of Contemporary African American Poets.

Vievee’s first collection of poems, “Blue-Tail Fly,” was published by Wayne State University Press in 2006. She received a Rona Jaffe Foundation Writer’s Award in 2009 and earned her MFA from the University of Michigan where she was the 2009-2010 Poet-in-Residence. Her second poetry collection, “Horse in the Dark” (2012) won the Cave Canem/Northwestern University Press Poetry Prize.
