Carriage House Poetry Series 2011 - Laura Boss

The Carriage House Poetry Series invites the public to attend a free reading by the internationally acclaimed poet, Laura Boss, on Tuesday, September 20, 2011.  This event will take place at 8:00pm in the Kuran Arts Center on Watson Road, off North Martine Avenue, adjacent to Fanwood Borough Hall (GPS use 75 N. Martine Avenue).

Woodbridge native Laura Boss, recipient of three poetry fellowships from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, has received many poetry awards including a first place in the Poetry Society of America’s Gordon Barber Poetry Contest.  She has read at many venues in Europe and was the sole representative of the United States at the 26th International Poetry Readings.  More recent featured readings include the Dylan Thomas Centre in Wales, the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, and the 2010 Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival.  This summer, she won the only prize at the first International Poetry Festival in Swansea, Wales.   A long-time Dodge Poet-in-the-Schools, Laura Boss is the author of six books of poetry, including “Arms: New and Selected Poems” (1999) and her newest book, “Flashlight” (Guernica Editions). As a visiting artist, workshop leader and mentor to young poets, she has been a familiar figure on the Northeast poetry scene for decades.   Laura Boss has read her work on National Public Radio and her poems have been published in the New York Times, Connecticut Review, New York Quarterly and numerous other publications.  She founded LIPS magazine in 1981 and continues to publish the biannual poetry journal from her home in Guttenberg.   The Carriage House Poetry Series is in its thirteenth year at the Patricia Kuran Arts Center, an historic Gothic Revival structure that was once a 19th century carriage house, hence the name of the series.  This September. 20th reading is free and open to the public.  An open mic will follow the featured performance.  For more information call 908-889-7223 or 908-889-5298.  For online directions and information, visit http://carriagehousepoetryseries.blogspot.com/.
