Celebrate Banned Books Week - Scotch Plains Library

Come and celebrate "Banned Books Week" with a Film about the Notorious Huck Finn.  Each year, American Public Libraries celebrate the right of Intellectual Freedom with Banned Books Week.

This year, Scotch Plains Public Library will be hosting a film and discussion about one of the most frequently contested books of all time, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain.  This book has fueled heated debate, from its publication in 1885 to its revised republication this summer, with many objectionable words censored out.

Join us at the Scotch Plains Public Library on Thursday, September 22 at 7:00pm for a screening of the film Born to Trouble: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.  The film features scholars, parents and Mark Twain historians who present a thorough and captivating discussion about why
this book is both beloved and banned by so many people and institutions.  A discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of exposure to such a contentious book will follow the screening.

“More than a history lesson, Born to Trouble is storytelling at its best, probing important questions about race, class, censorship, and culture: Why does this universally admired book offend so many?  How do we distinguish between a critique of a social problem and the perpetuation of the problem?  Does the required reading of prior generations have relevance for today's students?” (PBS Culture Shock Series)

This program is free and open to all interested participants. Attendees are encouraged to register through the library’s website: http://www.scotlib.org or by phone: 908-322-5007, x.204 or e-mail library@scotlib.org.

The Scotch Plains Library is located at 1927 Bartle Avenue, one block from Park Avenue in the center of town.
