On the heels of a sold-out Fifth Annual Jewish Film Festival this past fall, the JCC of Central New Jersey is introducing the Jewish Film Festival Spring Mini Series.
Two films will be shown in April. On Thursday, April 8, A Matter of Size will be presented at 7:30 p.m., and Blessed is the Match: the Life & Death of Hannah Senesh will be shown at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 29. In order to accommodate the growing festival audience, the venue was changed to the AMC Loews Theatre in Mountainside, NJ this past fall and will continue there this spring.
A Matter of Size, nominated for 13 Israeli Academy Awards and winner of three, is directed by Sharon Maymon and Erez Tadmor. It is an endearing comedy about four overweight friends living in Israel who discover the world of sumo wrestling where fat guys are respected heroes. This film follows a tender, funny path from body shame to body celebration and from loneliness to love.

The Life & Death of Hannah Senesh, directed by Roberta Grossman, is a powerful documentary about Hannah Senesh who was first a poet and diarist and then a paratrooper, resistance fighter and heroine. During a 1944 mission to rescue Hungary's Jews, Senesh was captured and imprisoned by the Nazis. Susan Beer, Holocaust survivor and fellow prisoner of Hannah Senesh, will be the guest speaker that night.
Tickets are $12 in advance for JCC members, seniors age 65+ and students, and $14 for the community. At the door, tickets are $15. Advance ticket purchase is strongly recommended as screenings often sell out. Tickets can be purchased online at www.jccnj.org, by mail or in person at the JCC in Scotch Plains.
