Bigg Playdate in Scotch Plains holds first 'Bigg' Dance Party

Event space is complete following summer remodel

The event space, , in Scotch Plains known for its , held it's first Bigg Dance Party on Friday evening.

Although only a few girls showed up to the Bigg Dance Party, proprietor Lisa Schiller expects a better turnout as word gets around and the weather starts getting cooler.

The DJ for the party was sixth grader, DJ Mixmaster Max, who realized quickly that playing One Direction would get people dancing.

Next week Schiller will hold another Bigg Dance Party at 6p.m. for $10 a person.

Bigg Playdate officially opened for business at the end of June, but underwent remodel throughout the summer. Schiller said she looked at last week as her official opening.

Several parties were booked just within the last week. After labor day the phone started ringing non-stop, Schiller said.

Schiller also runs a program, free smoothies for phone numbers. She has set up a text and email system to let members know what's going on at Bigg Playdate.

When Schiller's children were younger, she mentioned there was nowhere to go where both moms and children could both enjoy themselves.

"It was either you were having fun, or they were," she said. "Nobody has time to just sit down and socialize."

Starting this week Schiller is holding afternoon playdates for parents and children.
The cost for playdates is $12 per child, parents and children under one are free.

Bigg Playdate is set up as two spaces, a cafe on one side and an open space on the other that could be used as a dance floor, play room, or party area.

It is clear from first walking in that Schiller put a lot of effort into making Bigg Playdate a visually appealing space, from the chandeliers to the modern silver seating.

The idea of having a space for both parents and their children to socialize exists a lot on the West Coast.

Schiller noted how the toddler age is tough and she hopes Bigg Playdate will provide a different experience for parents to take their children during the day.

Party packages can be themed, where Schiller will transform the space into a sushi party, superheroes, glam and much more. You can see more themed events on her website biggplaydate.com. Packages start from $200.

In addition to serving as a party space, Bigg Playdate was approached by the group Mommy and Me to hold dance classes at the location.

Schiller mentioned that the local band in Scotch Plains, inSKAgnito, also spoke with her about performing at the location.

Any group is welcome to rent the space at Bigg Playdate and Schiller encourages anyone with a talent or something they like to inquire about using her space.
