Brief: Flexing in Fanwood

A pilates studio on South Avenue hosts an open house Saturday.

Instead of hitting the gym, many Scotch Plains and Fanwood residents have turned to , a pilates and gyrotonics studio on South Avenue in Fanwood. The studio, which opened in June, held an open house Saturday.

“It’s a very thorough work out,” instructor Sophie Giaretta said. “We teach people how to access muscles. It is a great tool.”

Pilates seeks to build flexibility and strength by focusing on the lower back and surrounding muscles. A machine called “the reformer” helps expand that focus to also include the legs, arms and pelvis.

“Shirley is great,” Pace said of owner Shirley Wallitsch. “We leave here feeling energized.”
