Marvel Celebrates 70 Years at SP Comic Book Store

Fans of all ages attended the event, which was a first of its kind.

Patrons of all ages poured into Little Shop of Comics in downtown Scotch Plains at 9 p.m. Tuesday to celebrate Marvel Comics' 70th anniversary.

The celebration was one of the first of its kind for the store and for Marvel. Shop owner Steve Olsen said that he's not sure why Marvel decided to celebrate its 70th anniversary, but that the company contacted him and other stores a few weeks ago asking them to celebrate.

Olsen and his wife, Lena, sold a selection of Marvel variants for 70 percent off Tuesday night. Certain back issues were available for 70 cents each. Comic book fans were also able to purchase the first issue of an eight installment Marvels Project series, which was released especially for the company's 70th anniversary and officially goes on sale Wednesday.

After perusing the store's new inventory for a short while, patrons retreated to the back room to sing "Happy Birthday" to Marvel. Young children all huddled around the table to blow out the candles and get the first slices of an Iron Man-decorated cake.
