5 Things: Fitness Program for Breast-Cancer Survivors, Poetry Series and More

The events and issues to keep in mind today.

  1. Two days after hosting a 5K fundraiser for former Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School teacher Diane McGovern, who is suffering from inflammatory breast cancer, the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA introduces a ten-week exercise program for breast-cancer survivors titled "Take Back Control After Breast Cancer." The classes, which are being held in partnership with MovingOn, will provide a full-body fitness regimen that pays special attention to increasing range of motion and building strength in weakened areas specific to breast cancer survivors. Lat flap and tram flap patients are encouraged to participate as well. .
  2. The Carriage House Poetry Series continues with author Gail Fishman Gerwin and poet John Amen. The program, which is free, starts at 8 p.m. at the , located on Watson Road in Fanwood. For more information, call Adele Kenny at 908-889-7223 or visit carriagehousepoetryseries.blogspot.com.
  3. The CHILD Organization of Scotch Plains and Fanwood offers a free workshop for parents titled, "Navigating and Surviving Social Situations." Social skills expert Susan Mendelson and her associate, Lauren Whitmore, will explore a variety of issues relating to children's social development. The program starts at 7:15 p.m. in the Scotch Plains TV Studio, located in the basement of the Municipal Building. RSVPs are recommended, as space is limited.   4. The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA hosts "Aqua Olympics," featuring fun and games for every age, including parents. From 1 to 3:30 p.m., families can take part in noodle races, games of "backseat drive" and more. The even costs $5 per family or $3 per individual.
