5 Things: Lectures on Career Networking, Chemical Dependency, End-of-Life Care and the Mideast

The events and issues to keep in mind today.

  1. The Scotch Plains Public Library's Career Networking Group hosts "Journey to Reemployment," a free lecture led by group alumna Rosaria Carr.   2. The Scotch Plains-Fanwood PTA's Chemical Dependency Committee hosts a free lecture at the high school from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on alcohol, drugs and other destructive behaviors. The program is open to high school students and middle school students accompanied by a parent or guardian, and is intended to initiate dialogue between parents and their children about substance abuse.   3. The JCC of Central New Jersey's "University Lecture Series" concludes tonight with Gil Hoffman, the chief political correspondent and analyst for the newspaper Jerusalem Post. Hoffman will present a lecture titled, "Peace, Politics and Plutonium: An Israeli Insider's Look at Efforts to Prevent a Nuclear Iran and Advance Mideast Peace."   4. Immaculate Heart of Mary Church hosts a free interactive presentation titled, "Advance Care Planning: How to Stay in Control of Your Preferences." The director of the palliative care program at Overlook Hospital, an oncologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and an internist and clinical educator at St. Barnabas Medical Center will discuss end-of-lie issues and advance directives, and their relationship with Catholic teachings.   5. Two Scotch Plains committees hold meetings tonight. The Planning Board meets at 7:30 p.m. in the Municipal Building courtroom. The Recreation Commission holds a caucus meeting at 7:30 p.m. in room 202 of the Municipal Building.
