A Look Back at Summer: August

A rundown of the news and events that made up the month.

August felt like a month of anticipation, with the summer winding down and fall activities heating up.

Most of the summer festivals, shows and series came to an end, while sports teams and other groups started prepping for back to school. Locals still squeezed in a little last-minute fun, though, as temperatures heated up to their hottest of the season.

Miss something last month? Here's a look back.
  • Local real estate agents reported in August that they'd seen a surge in area home sales over the summer.
  • The YMCA Piranhas swim team finished 17th in the Long Course Finals at the University of Maryland.
  • High fashion hit Fanwood when Seng Couture opened up across from the Fanwood Train Station on Aug. 1.
  • The high school soccer team took a trip to Brazil to tour the country and play some of its own soccer stars in early August.
  • National Night Out events in Scotch Plains and Fanwood brought the community out for a night of crime awareness and fun on Aug. 4.
  • The borough of Fanwood found out on Aug. 6 that it would not be awarded extraordinary aid from the state, forcing the mayor and council to convene to adjust the budget.
  • The Little Shop of Comics in Scotch Plains celebrated Marvel Comics' 70th anniversary with a late-night birthday party in the store on Aug. 11.
  • The STARS Theater Program put on its final performance of the season, from August 14 to 16.
  • The first heat wave of the summer hit the area on Aug. 16.
  • The Raiders football team began practice on Aug. 17.
  • The Woodland Quartet performed their annual show at the Scotch Plains Public Library on Aug. 18.
  • Union Catholic High spent most of August making progress on its new field turf.
  • The Scotch Plains Summer Concert Series came to a close on Aug. 20 with performances by Mr. Richard and High Road.
  • Mayor Colleen Mahr was named to the governor's ethics task force.
  • The new blood center in Scotch Plains opened its doors on Aug. 21.
  • A pedestrian was critically injured after he was hit and dragged by a driver on Park Avenue. He died later.
  • The Raiders football team tested their lineup during their first scrimmage on Aug. 25.
  • The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Board of Education announced during its Aug. 27 meeting that it's been awarded federal stimulus money for special education. Board member Sasha Slocum also announced her resignation.
  • The Scotch Plains-Fanwood High's Athletic and Music Boosters Clubs held a joint golf outing fundraiser on Aug. 31.
