A Look Back at Summer: June

A rundown of the news and events that made up the month.

It's been a busy summer in Scotch Plains and Fanwood. Despite plenty of people being out of town, a lot still happened over these past few months.

Before we dive into fall, we thought we'd take one last look at all that took place during June, July and August. Over the next few days, we'll bring you a guide to the issues and events that made the news during each of those months. We start with June.

  • The summer got off to a good start with the Junior Women Club's town-wide garage sale on June 6. Dozens of residents put their used goods out for sale, while many more walked the streets to peruse what was being offered.
  • One day later on June 7, families were treated to an afternoon of fun and food at the Fanwood Street Fair and Crafts Show.
  • The Scotch Plains Township Council passed a sewer utility on June 9 that will charge residents based on their individual water usage.
  • A group of local boys earned the top honor of Eagle Scout in early June.
  • Parts of South Avenue and the Hetfield Avenue Bridge were shut down for hours on June 16 after a tractor trailer derailed while trying to go over the bridge.
  • Fanwood and Scotch Plains held a public forum to introduce their shared services study on June 18.
  • U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, along with Gov. Jon Corzine, stopped by the Fanwood Memorial Library to talk to local librarians and educators, and to promote the president's summer service initiative, on June 20.
  • The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Class of 2009 bid farewell to high school on June 23.
  • The Board of Education adopted its five-year plan on June 25, which includes goals for increased technology and service-learning initiatives.
  • The Scotch Plains Farmer's Market officially opened on June 27.
  • The STARS Theater program put on its first show of the summer, "The Wizard of Oz," on June 27.
  • Fanwood's CERT team, along with other local emergency groups, were put to the test during a drill on June 28.
  • Scotch Plains new township manager, Chris Marion, assumed his new role on June 29.
  • The Scotch Plains mayor and council passed the 2009 budget on June 30.
  • Fanwood's Summer Movie Festival kicked off with a "Party in the Park" at LaGrande Park on June 30.
