About Town: Needle Night, Antiques Appraisals and More

Patch columnist Mike Prasad gives a rundown of what has Fanwood residents talking this week.

Needle Night on Friday, April 1
Sounds painful – but it's not. It's really a chance for knit and crochet folks to get together at the  at 7:30 p.m. to start a new quilt project. Yarn donations are also welcome, as the group works on projects for newborns, area nursing homes and those who may need the extra comfort of a prayer shawl. For more information, call the church at 908-889-8891 or email fanwoodpress@erols.com.

Kicks Off its New Season with Two Events
The Fanwood Historic Preservation Commission launches its 2011 series of events with two programs. Both will take place at the Fanwood Museum, located in the historic train station building's first floor.

  • Yola Chalabi, an experienced antiques appraiser, will be at the museum on April 3 at 2 p.m. Fanwood residents and others can bring one or two of their historic items for a review of their historic and intrinsic value.
  • Ted Bassman, a longtime local resident, will be at the museum on May 1 at 2 p.m. to speak about growing up in Fanwood and the rise of the businesses along Martine Avenue. Mr. Bassman's father owned a deli in Fanwood, which was a social gathering spot for many years.
