About Town: 'United for a Cause,' Music of the '50s, Easter Egg Hunt and More

Patch columnist Mike Prasad gives a rundown of what has Scotch Plains and Fanwood residents talking.

Don't Forget: United for Cause Run on Saturday
Students and teachers at have teamed with members of the to organize "United for a Cause," a 5K and one-mile fun-run to benefit the Diane McGovern Fund. The fund and its supporters are collecting money to help defray medical costs for McGovern, a former SPFHS english teacher who is suffering breast cancer. . 

Registration Open for Fanwood Summer Recreation Programs
Children in grades kindergarten through six can now register for the borough's eight-week Summer Recreation Program at . Enrollment is limited to Fanwood residents Tuesday and Wednesday, then opens to the general public Thursday. Participants may register for morning and/or afternoon sessions, and for as many weeks they would like, space permitting.

Music of the 1950s with Prof. Stephen Marcone, on Thursday, April 14
The hosts a lecture Thursday titled, "The Music of the 1950s," presented by Stephen F. Marcone, professor of music at William Patterson College. The program, which runs from 7 to 9 p.m., will explore how and why the musical tastes of American listeners underwent dramatic changes in the 1950s. It will incorporate audio and video elements and discuss the evolution of pop, from Nat "King" Cole, Perry Como, Doris Day and Pat Boone, to early rock and roll artists.

FYO Pitch, Hit, and Run Competition
The Fanwood Youth Organization's baseball league holds its second annual Pitch, Hit, and Run competition at LaGrande Park on Saturday. The program is geared toward providing participants the opportunity to participate in a free competition that recognizes individual excellence in core baseball skills.

Fanwood’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt
Also on Saturday, Fanwood is playing host to its annual Easter Egg Hunt, which begins "eggs-actly" at 10 a.m. at Forest Road Park (rain date: April 23, same time and place). All children 10 and under are invited to meet the Easter Bunny and join the fun. More than one thousand eggs filled with all sorts of goodies – including hundreds of prize tickets – will be hidden around the park. Even more prizes will be given out for these contests:

  • Guess the number of jellybeans
  • Guess the number of chocolate eggs
  • Egg-decorating contest – bring your own decorated egg to enter
  • Bunny-drawing contest – bring your own bunny drawing to enter

Union County Household Hazardous Waste Collection
Get rid of household "special waste" items, such as tires, mercury thermometers and thermostats and propane tanks, at a special collection day Saturday at Union County College's Cranford campus, located at 1033 Springfield Avenue. Union County Firing Range to Open to Public
"Going to the range to shoot" won't just apply to golf next month. The Union County Sheriff's Office new pistol range, located at 301 Shunpike Road in Springfield, will open to the public on Sundays, starting May 1. Those who wish to use the range will need to attend an orientation class before they start firing. The range orientation and safety course will be held April 14, 18, 21 and 25 at 7 p.m. Course and safety cards cost $20 for Union County residents. For more information, call 908-273-1129.
