County Awards 'Heart Grants' to Four Local Groups and Artists

The program is intended to support local culture throughout Union County.

The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders has awarded its arts and culture grant to four local Scotch Plains-Fanwood groups and artists this year.

Established in 1998, the Heart Grant Program (History, Education, Arts Reaching Thousands) supports projects related to history, the arts and humanities in Union County.

This year, the following locals were awarded funds:

  • Connie Pinkowski, of Fanwood, was given $1,000 for an after school photography program.
  • Candace Waller, of Fanwood, was given $700 for an African-American dance workshop and performance.
  • The Borough of Fanwood was given $1,000 for the Fanwood Cultural Arts performance series.
  • Early Childhood Advisory Council, of Scotch Plains, was given $2,500 for assisting families of young children to understand cognitive development.
In total, more than 38 groups and artists across Union County were awarded the grant this year. Total funding for 2009 reached $75,000.

“The services provided by these artists, scholars and organizations directly benefit the residents of our county and increase appreciation for the arts, our history, and the humanities,” Freeholder Chairman Alexander Mirabella said in a statement. “These cultural assets are a vital part of community life, well being, economic development and cultural heritage tourism in Union County.”
