Editor's Notebook: Week in Review

A look back at the past week's news and events.

The school budget hearing is set for May 17; SPFHS baseball was knocked out of the UCT tournament and will focus on the states.

Here's a look back at these stories and more from throughout the week: 

On Monday, SPFHS was all over the news. First we heard about students competing in the Battle of the Bands. The Raiders softball squad was seeded ninth in the UCT, and baseball star pitcher Gary Binkiewicz decided to attended Quinnipiac University. The Scotch Plains Public Library opened a month-long exhibit celebrating the life of President Abraham Lincoln.

On Tuesday, the budget was back in the news, as Patch reported that the majority of the SP Council feels the budget is as lean as it can be. We shared the police reports from the week. The FSPY Oldtimer's Basketball League wrapped up its inaugural regular season, and Janet Dillon offered spring gardening tips.

On Wednesday, we reported that the SP Council and Fanwood Council are working to set a date for the school budget hearing, which is now set for May 17 at the high school. Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr commented on the budget revisions. The SP Police Department reports that it is hoping to lower the speed limit to 35MPH in select areas. Ellen Dickson spoke to Patch about joining the race for Union County Freeholder late in the game.

On Thursday, kids had a chance to master the art of riding a bike at the annual Training Wheel Toss. The SP-F varsity baseball squad advanced to the UCT semifinals, scheduled for Saturday against Cranford. John Celock told us about a workshop in Westfield to teach students about the importance of booster seats and seat-belts. 

On Friday, Fanwood mom Deirdre Coolidge addressed the tragic murder of UVA student Yeardley Love. We also heard about the SP-F golf team's struggles in the UCT and Union Catholic softball's loss to Cranford.

The weekend featured a look at ways to celebrate Mother's Day in Scotch Plains and Fanwood, as well as coverage of the SP-F varsity baseball games. SPFHS defeated conference rival Westfield on the road Friday.
