Fanwood Train Station Goes Green

Recycling bins were recently installed.

For commuters who prefer to recycle their morning newspapers or cans and bottles, NJTransit has answered the call.

NJTransit installed four recycling bins — two for paper and two for cans/bottles — at the Fanwood Train Station on Jan. 22. Spokesman Dan Stessel told Patch that the bins are part of NJTransit's initiative to install recycling receptacles at all of its rail stations.

"This initiative is taking place in two phases," Stessel said. "The first phase that began a year ago involved installing recycling bins at our 43 busiest stations, those with 1,000 or more boardings per day. So all of our major terminals and busiest outlying stations got them. Then phase two began earlier this month, filling in the remaining stations on a line by line basis."

The Raritan Valley line was first on that phase two list. NJTransit is currently installing the bins at all of the line's stations, and hopes to have the project complete by April. It will then move on to stations on other New Jersey transit lines.

Stessel said the program, which is not at a large cost to NJTransit, is a joint effort with the state Department of Environmental Protection.

"We are committed to being good stewards of the environment," he said. "We planned this out with our counterparts at the DEP to figure out the most appropriate way to provide a convenient way for our customers to recycle."
