Fate of Scotch Plains Day Up in the Air

The annual festival may be cancelled if the weather turns sour.

The wet weather expected for our area throughout the weekend may put a damper on Scotch Plains Weekend.

The high school's pep rally and bonfire, which were scheduled for tonight, have already been cancelled due to the forecast of rain throughout the day.

What will happen tomorrow and Sunday remains to be seen.

Jana Giannaci of the Scotch Plains Recreation Department told Patch that it has not yet been determined whether to cancel the Lions Club Craft Fair, scheduled for Saturday, and Scotch Plains Day, scheduled for Sunday.

The organizer of the craft fair will arrive at the municipal parking lot at 8 a.m. tomorrow and make a decision based on the weather at that time.

"If it's raining at 8 a.m., it'll definitely be shut down," Giannaci said.

No official announcement will be posted on the township's Web site if the event is cancelled, so those planning to attend should keep a look out for rain themselves.

Right now, the National Weather Service predicts a 90 percent chance of rain for Scotch Plains-Fanwood on Saturday, with most of it starting after 9 a.m. Precipitation is expected to continue throughout the evening, with new rainfall amounts between a quarter and half an inch possible.

Sunday looks just as wet, with an 80 percent chance of rain. New rainfall amounts then are expected to be between a tenth and a quarter of an inch.

Organizers of Scotch Plains Day will make the decision about whether to cancel the event Saturday night. That information will be posted on the township's Web site.

No word yet on whether Saturday's big football game against Westfield will be put on hold. Stay tuned to Patch for more information as it becomes available.
