Five Things: Planning Board to Discuss Shack. Resolution; Plus Holiday Closings, Theater and More

The events to keep in mind today.

  1. The Scotch Plains Planning Board convenes a special meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday to discuss the feasibility of declaring Shackamaxon Golf and Country Club and several municipal properties "areas in need of rehabilitation."  
  2. Happy President's Day! Scotch Plains-Fanwood students, if you're reading this at 6 a.m., go back to bed – public schools are closed for the day. The Scotch Plains and Fanwood libraries will also be closed today.
  3. The Best Friends Thrift Shop on East Second Street in Scotch Plains hosts "Customer Appreciation Day." From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., customers can swing by the store for free coffee and snacks. For more information, call 908-322-5420.
  4. The Plainfield Chapter of New Jersey Orators visits Barnes and Noble in Springfield at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Young and gifted orators will recite works in honor of Black History Month and Presidents' Day. To learn more, call 973-376-8544.
  5. Check out "eye-popping" science demonstrations and experiments at Trailside Nature and Science Center in Mountainside on Monday afternoon. From 1:30 to 2:15 p.m., "Up, Up and Away with Mad Science of West NJ" will offer exciting, hands-on educational performances that explore the three states of matter, air pressure and more, according to a press release distributed by the Union County Office of Public Information The show is recommended for children ages 4 and up. Tickets cost $4 per person, and go on sale at 1 p.m. at the Trailside Visitor Center.
