Heat Wave to Hit Area

An air quality alert has been issued through Tuesday.

The summer season may be winding down, but it's only getting hotter in Scotch Plains and Fanwood.

The area is expected to experience its first heat wave of the summer over the next few days. According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are expected to reach above 90 degrees today and Tuesday. Sunday was also a scorcher with temperatures in the 90s.

The weather service has issued an air quality alert for the area through 11 p.m. Those who are sensitive, including the very young, elderly and persons with respiratory diseases, including asthma, are encouraged to avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the afternoon and early evening. Fine particle are also forecast to be in the moderate category due to high humidity and hot temperatures.

Even if you're not in the sensitive category, it's still best to take caution when going outdoors.

Here are some tips from the American Red Cross on how to deal with the heat:

  • Never leave children or pets alone in an enclosed vehicle.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, even if you don't feel thirsty. Avoid caffeine and alcohol.
  • Eat small meals, and eat more often.
  • Avoid extreme temperature changes.
  • Wear loose-fitting, light-colored, lightweight clothing.
  • Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day.
  • Postpone outdoor sports and activities.
  • Use the buddy system when working outdoors in the excessive heat.
  • Take frequent breaks if you must work outdoors.
  • Check on family, friends and neighbors, who do not have air conditioning, who spend a lot of time alone or may be affected by the heat.
  • Check on your animals frequently to make sure they are not suffering because of the heat.
