Locals 'Come Together' for Beatles Rock Band at Library

Families and friends gathered to play the new game for the first time this past weekend.

Sept. 9, 2009, was a big day for Beatles fans everywhere, with the release of The Beatles Rock Band video game and the re-release of all of their albums in mono and stereo.

Now, a bit of that excitement has reached the Scotch Plains Public Library.

The library received a copy of the Rock Band Wii video game last week for patrons to enjoy. Reference Librarian Pamela Brooks said they weren't expecting to be able to get a copy so fast due to its overwhelming popularity, but that once they acquired it, the library quickly scheduled a date for patrons to come in and play the game, which allows them to perform their favorite songs using controllers modeled after musical instruments.

This past Saturday, local residents of all ages spent the day playing The Beatles Rock Band in the library's community room. Families showed up together to escape the dreary weather outside and rocked out while showing off their skills at playing a wide variety of Beatles tunes. All encouraged each other and tried to improve their virtual musical chops. For those that were new at the game, old pros were on hand to help them out.

While Wii sessions might seem a bit odd for a library to include in its programming, Brooks explained that the video game has become part of the library's regular offerings for middle school-aged children. The library allows those with good standing in the library to participate in fun activities such as Wii events, classes, and even field trips.

The library’s Wii isn’t reserved for the kids, though. The library also offered adults, and even grandparents, several opportunities over the summer to come in and try the popular gaming device.

Brooks said she hasn’t scheduled any further Beatles Rock Band sessions just yet, but the library does have several Wii sessions planned throughout the fall. For a full list of the library's activities, visit www.scotlib.org.
