Towns with financial difficulties this year are scrambling to save the expensive tradition.

Several Union County towns are struggling to save one of July 4th's most popular traditions: fireworks.

Summit, Cranford and New Providence almost canceled their fireworks shows due to a lack of funding, but eventually were able to save them thanks to the help of private sponsors and the county.

The city of Rahway has canceled its fireworks this week because it thought the celebration would be insensitive to recently laid off employees.
