NYTimes.com: Scotch Plains Musician Receives Kidney Donation From Longtime Fan

David Ware performed live in Manhattan last Thursday, for the first time in more than a year.

David S. Ware, a 59-year-old renowned avant-garde jazz saxophonist and Scotch Plains resident, initially tried to avoid receiving a kidney transplant.

But after his dialysis stopped working in January, he reluctantly agreed to let his record producer send out an e-mail to fans notifying them of his need for a healthy organ.

The response played out in ways Ware didn't expect.
