Pups Compete for Top Prize in Annual Dog Show

The event at The Chelsea featured 15 canines this year.

Pups of all types were the stars at The Chelsea in Fanwood this weekend. But a two-year-old Cockapoo named PC was the top dog.

The assisted living facility held its fourth annual dog show on Saturday. The event featured 15 canines, including Chihuahuas, Bijon Frises, a Greyhound, a Golden Retriever and various rescue dogs of mixed breeds.

“This is a low pressure and fun event, pure-breeds not necessary,” said Linda Caminiti, director of community relations at the Chelsea.

Participants paid a $5 fee to enroll their dogs. All the proceeds went to the Plainfield Humane Society.

Caminiti said that the annual event is a favorite of both the residents at The Chelsea and the Fanwood community.

The dogs were judged on a scale from 1 to 10 in the areas of friendliness, appearance, and ability to do tricks. Judges included three residents of The Chelsea and Fanwood Councilwoman Donna Dolce. Union County Freeholder Chairman Al Mirabella, a Fanwood resident, also attended.

PC’s owner, Jan Siegel, is a former nurse at The Chelsea. She said that her pup, whose initials stand for Pookas Champion, is being trained to become a therapy dog.

Each contestant received a “doggie goodie bag,” but the big prize up for grabs was a $100 gift certificate to stay at K-9 Resorts, an upscale dog hotel in Fanwood that offers pups their own rooms, complete with TVs and a bed. Second place winners received gift certificates to PetSmart.
