Rotary Club Awarded $450,000 for Student Scholarships

The money was donated by one of the member's deceased patients.

The Fanwood-Scotch Plains Rotary Club has been given $450,000 to put toward its student scholarship fund.

The club announced last week that at a recent meeting, area CPA Neil Schembre presented the group a check for $450,000, on behalf of a deceased patient. The check was given to Dr. Robert V. Scalera, Chairman of the Rotary-Garbe Foundation. The foundation annually provides college scholarships for graduating high school students living in Fanwood or Scotch Plains.

The Rotary-Garbe Foundation has provided $20,000 annually in scholarships. Since it's inception, 332 students have received assistance.

"With this donation, we should be able to increase our giving next year and for many years to come," Scalera said.
