Scotch Plains Wellness Challenge Off To Strong Start

Competitors in The Challenge can earn points by participating in activities to improve body, mind, and soul.

It has been a week since the Scotch Plains Wellness Challenge got underway. The Challenge, an effort of the state-wide Mayor’s Wellness Campaign, is a twelve-week program that hopes to motivate Scotch Plains residents to adopt healthier lifestyles.

The Challenge kick started last week at the Scotch Hills Country Club, where participants were able to register and learn more about the program. Attendees were also able to partake in a Zumba class, a taste of the physical activities the program offers. Mayor Nancy Malool was in attendance, and believed the event would spark more sign ups in the coming weeks.

“There’s nothing to prohibit people from signing up online after this,” she said. “It’s an ongoing thing. Even if you sign up in week 6 of 12, you’re okay.”

Participants in the Challenge earn points by engaging in activities to improve their body, mind, and soul. Participants log these points online, and the team with the most at the end of the Challenge will be dubbed the winner. Competitors with a high number of points also have a better chance of winning a prize at the Finale Expo and Awards Ceremony in May.

“For every 100 points you earn, you get a raffle ticket,” Malool said. “At the end, the raffle tickets will enable you to win prizes. The more tickets you have, the better chance you have to win more prizes. The Challenge isn’t about the prizes, though; it’s about developing an overall healthier lifestyle.”

She added, with a smile, “but the prizes are nice.”

The Challenge offers classes at Scotch Hills every Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. and Saturday at 10:15 a.m. Extra points can be earned by attending seminars, and by bringing friends. For more information on The Challenge, visit scotchplainschallenge.com.
