Sixth Graders Get Sneak Peek at Library

The students, who will be old enough to use the adult section once they enter seventh grade, came out today to learn more about the facilities.

Area sixth graders convened at the Scotch Plains Public Library today for an afternoon game of Wii, crafts and snacks.

The event was about more than just playtime, though. Those students who are heading to 7th grade next year, are now old enough to use the library's adult services on the main floor and were invited there today to get an introduction to the facilities.

"We give them an initiation of the protocols of the adult side, the behavior, expectations," librarian Jenny Lichtenwalner said.

This is the second year the library has held this June event for upcoming 7th graders, Lichtenwalner said. It also holds similar events for students monthly throughout the school year.

Librarians also showed the students how to use certain databases and do other research that may be required of them on class projects.

For the students, the event was mostly about the fun.

Georganne, age 11, and Vanessa, age 8, both said they already have Wii at home, but came out anyways to play with their friends.

"Mario Kart's my favorite," Georganne said.

The library sets the game up on a large projection screen in a room in the basement.

"The kids love the bowling," Lichtenwalner said, "because their characters on the screen are as big as they are."
