At Tuesday night's meeting, Scotch Plains councilmembers continued their discussion of a smoking ban for town properties and parks. At this meeting, after further discussion, the council revised the ordinance to remove Scotch Hills Golf Course from the ban (except for the minigolf course), and left room to designate a smoking area outside the municipal building.

Local residents Brian and Meghan Wilson have made headlines recently for their fight to enroll their 2-year-old daughter Vivian in the state's medical marijuana program. On Thursday, a bill inspired by Vivian's plight passed a State Senate panel, moving the family one step closer to obtaining a prescription for Vivian.

Consolidation Study Commission Meets Next Week

The Fanwood-Scotch Plains Consolidation Study Commission – a volunteer body charged with analyzing the potential merits of a consolidation between the two communities – has scheduled its first organizational meeting on Wednesday, June 12. The public is invited to attend the 7:30 p.m. meeting at the Board of Education building at Evergreen and Cedar Avenues.

Union Catholic Graduates the Class of 2013

On June 1, Union Catholic graduated 153 seniors. The Class of 2013 received a total of $13,358,197 in college scholarships and awards. Rosa Cuppari of Kenilworth was named valedictorian and Dara Maguire of Scotch Plains was named salutatorian.

Scotch Plains Motorcyclist Flown to Hospital After Crash

Did you hear a helicopter Tuesday night? Here's why: A medevac helicopter landed at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School to transport a motorcyclist who was struck by a car on Park Avenue around 9 p.m. According to Scotch Plains Police Capt. Brian Donnelly, the motorcyclist, a Scotch Plains resident, suffered internal injuries when he was hit by the car as it was turning left into the 7-Eleven on Park Avenue.

$5K 'New Jersey Heroes' Scholarship Awarded to SPFHS Student

A Scotch Plains-Fanwood High student was one of 20 students recognized by First Lady Mary Pat Christie with a $5,000 New Jersey Heroes Spirit of a Hero scholarship at Drumthwacket on Thursday, May 30. Christopher Stone was recognized for his work with the "Student Movement Against Cancer" club and the annual Relay for Life.
